Naomi Novik (born 30 April 1973) is an American writer. She is best known for her Temeraire fantasy/alternate history series of nine novels. Her first book, His Majesty's Dragon, won the 2007 Compton Crook Award for best first novel in the science fiction and fantasy category.[1] She was nominated for a Hugo Award for best novel in 2007,[2] and won the Nebula award for best novel in 2016 for Uprooted.[3]

Early life

Novik grew up in Roslyn Heights on Long Island. She is a second-generation American; her father is of Lithuanian Jewish ancestry, and her mother is an ethnic Pole. Displaying an interest in reading at a young age, she read The Lord of the Rings at age six[citation needed], and developed a love for Jane Austen a year later.

She studied English Literature at Brown University, and holds a master's degree in Computer Science from Columbia University. She participated in the design and development of the computer game Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide, until she discovered that she preferred writing to game design.[4]

Career

Novik's first novel, His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire in the UK), which commences the Temeraire series, is an alternate history of the Napoleonic Wars in a "Flintlock Fantasy" world in which dragons are abundant and are used in aerial combat. His Majesty's Dragon won the Compton Crook Award in 2007,[5] and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel.

In September 2006, Peter Jackson optioned the Temeraire series.[6] Novik's books are being released in audio book format. The first five were released by Books on Tape, beginning in 2007, and read by Simon Vance.[7] The sixth book was released by Tantor Audio in September 2010, also read by Vance.[8]

In September 2007, Novik was awarded the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer for best new science fiction writer of 2006. She also won the 2007 Compton Crook Award.[5]

In 2010 Novik said she plans to write a young-adult fantasy novel inspired by The Secret Garden.[9]

In 2011 Novik wrote Will Supervillains Be on the Final?, a new graphic novel about the next generation of high-flying costumed crusaders.

Novik has also written Uprooted, a novel "set in a fantasy world inspired by the Kingdom of Poland",[10] which won the Nebula award for best novel[3] and the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel.[11] The audiobook is narrated by Julia Emelin.

Charity work

Novik is an emeritus member of the board of the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of fan-media including fan fiction, fan videos (vids), and real-person fiction. The OTW project began in 2007.[12]

Personal life

Novik is married to the entrepreneur and writer Charles Ardai. They live in Manhattan.[4] They have one child, Evidence Novik Ardai, who was born in 2010.[13]
