Deltina Hay (born 1960) is an American author, publisher, web developer and social media expert. She is the author of numerous inbound marketing books as well as a lecturer on social media, Web 2.0, the mobile web, search engine optimization and other inbound marketing tactics.[3] She is a contributor to numerous online publications including Technorati, SocialMedia.biz, and Six Revisions. She is a professor at Drury University where she facilitates the online, graduate-level Social Media Certificate Program[4] and also teaches courses through Udemy,[5] Experts-Exchange, and WizIQ. She serves as a board member for the Independent Book Publishers Association where she also contributes to their newsletter and is an invited board member of the Internet Marketing Standards Board. She is considered a pioneer of Web 2.0[2] and is most notable for her book A Survival Guide to Social Media and Web 2.0 Optimization which has been adopted by numerous journalism and public relations departments[6] and was noted as one of the top 100 social media books of all time.[7][8] The second edition, retitled The Social Media Survival Guide is used as a social media text in colleges and universities worldwide including Minnesota State University, Ferris State University, and Georgia Southern University.[9][10]

Early life and education

Hay was born on December 19, 1960 in Fairbanks, Alaska and raised in the remote fishing town of Haines, Alaska which is known as the Bald Eagle capital of the world. She attended the University of Alaska in Juneau where she was awarded a B.S. in Management Information Systems in 1987. She earned her ABT M.S. in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Oregon State University in 1994. Hay completed her M.A. in 2006 when she received her degree in Counseling Psychology from St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas.[1][11]

Professional career

Hay is a professor at Drury University where she teaches Web 2.0 and social media courses in their social media program. Her book is also used as the primary textbook for some of her classes. Dr. Curt Gilstrap, director of the social media program at Drury, added an online version of Hay's class after receiving numerous requests from prospective students outside of the university.[4] Hay teaches courses on social media and mobile marketing through Udemy. Lectures that she teaches include teaching students how to leverage YouTube to drive more web traffic and how to market mobile applications. She also teaches beginning through advanced WordPress classes for Experts-Exchange.[5][12]

Hay is the founder and principal of the literary press Dalton Publishing, an independent publishing company based in Austin, Texas. Dalton specializes in poetry and contemporary literature.[13] Dalton has published nearly 20 books including Shadows & Light, Journeys With Outlaws in Revolutionary Hollywood by veteran stuntman Gary Kent[14] and the 2010 book of poetry The Skin of Light by Texas poet laureate Larry Thomas.[15] Hay also used Dalton as the catalyst to publish her first book, A Survival Guide to Social Media and Web 2.0 Optimization, in 2009. According to Dalton's web site it no longer publishes any books as of 2011.

Hay founded and edits for two popular blog sites, Social Media Power[16] and Mobile Web Slinger.[17] Social Media Power and Mobile Web Slinger are websites that provide resources, tips, tutorials, and mobile applications on social media, the mobile web, inbound marketing, and the future of the internet.[16][17] Hay is also the founder of Plumb Web Solutions, a consulting service dedicated to helping business owners create search, social, and semantic optimized web presences.[18]

Publications and lectures

Hay is the author of four books. She is a lecturer and has spoken at at events such as IBPA's Publishing University, the Publisher's Association of the South's Winder Conclave, the Writers' League of Texas' Editors and Agents Conference, the American Advertising Federation, the St. Louis Publisher's Assocition, and the Pacific Northwest Bookseller's Association.[3] She is a featured speaker for Social Marketing Animals, a website dedicated to providing social marketing tips and advice.[19]

Lectures

Hay is a sought after lecturer and has given numerous lectures throughout the United States. In 2008, she presented at the Publisher's Association of the South's Winter Conclave where she gave a presentation on using social media newsrooms. She also gave a presentation on social media for authors at the 2008 Writer's League of Texas Editors and Agents Conference in Austin, Texas. Hay was also invited by the Pacific Northwest Bookseller's Association where she presented on creating a social web presence. This event was held in 2008 in Portland, Oregon.[20]

Hay was a featured presenter at the 2009 Governor's Nonprofit Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas where she gave two 90 minutes presentations on social media. She was also the keynote speaker at the 2009 Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster Conference held in Austin, TX.[20]

Hay was a major contributor the IBPA's Publishing University 2009 BookExpo America held in New York City. She gave a presentation on building an optimized social web presence. She hosted a panel on using social media in marketing and sat on an additional panel on creating buzz using social media.[20]

Hay has been published in numerous online journals and other publications. She has a regular column on Technorati[21] and is a featured editor for SocialMedia.biz and the Examiner.[22][23]
