Union Leader is a 2017 Indian drama film directed by Sanjay Patel and starring Rahul Bhat and Tillotama Shome. The film's original title was Kamdar Union that was later changed to Union Leader during the post production.[1]

Plot

Resigned to his fate as a worker in a notoriously shoddy chemical plant, Jay wants little more than for his wife and son to escape their life of poverty but soon he realizes that he must not only find a way to support his family, but also overcome grave social and legal injustice in the system.[2]

Cast

Filming

The filming took place at Vatva, Ahmedabad, Gujarat and it was wrapped up towards the end of December 2016. The film was shot in India in late 2016, and features an all-Indian cast. However, the post-production work was done in Calgary.[2][3]

Release

Union Leader has already been accepted by several film festivals, including the Hof International Film Festival in Germany and the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival in Florida.[2] The film was released on 19 January 2018. A special screening of the film was conducted at the Suncor Energy Centre, Fort McMurray in November 2017.[4]

Reception

Though critical of the film, Anna MM Vetticad in her review for Firstpost praised Bhat's performance and gave the film a 1.5/5 rating.[5] Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in noted that the supporting actors "actually look like blue-collared representatives rather than Bollywood extras".[6]

Pallabi Dey Purkayastha of The Times of India gave the film a 2.5/5 rating.[7] Ravi Bule of Amar Ujala wrote that Shome did justice to her role.[8]
