Plot

Bashirudeen aka Bachu is an ambitious youth living with his mother and two sisters. His father is working abroad in middle east for 26 years and now planning to come back due to his deteriorating health. Bachu’s family is pressurizing him to go to gulf and take up employment with his father’s longstanding employer Ismail in the same company, but he is more interested in taking up business ventures in his hometown to make money without going abroad. Bachu runs a small-scale event company renting out equipment and furniture for marriage. He is in trouble with his investor Rajesh over not paying him any profit share to him due to the weak business during covid restriction times. He has been promising him good returns once the business picks up after the covid regulations. Bachus married sister is staying at his house due to an issue with her husband. She gives her necklace to her friend Vijeesh for pledging during an emergency without informing anyone. Since this happened during the covid lockdown starting, the issue gets blown out of proportion leading to the authorities preparing Vijeesh’s route map to trace the contamination possibilities. Bachu’s Brother-in-law Rashid is humiliated due to this incident since she gave the necklace without his knowledge and that too to a male friend. Bachu’s father Kamar has been calling him frequently from Qatar to talk with Rashid and convince him to patch up with his sister Bushara, which irks Bachu, and he rarely talks to his father.

Bachu’s old lover Baanu is also settled in Qatar with her husband, since Bachu could not marry her due to him not having a straight job. Bachu buys covid masks in bulk from an acquaintance nearby and plans to sell it to make profits during the quarantine time. He makes his friend pledge his expecting wife Sumi’s ornaments to get money for the same. After some initial small retail sales, he gets a bulk order through Vijeesh’s boss for his company. After getting paid, he gives a share to Rajesh as part of his investment for the event company and to make him invest more in future ventures. He gives some money to his mother also to drive home the point that he need not have to go to gulf to make money. Rashid comes to Bachu’s house with the local mosque elders for a compromise with Bushara. He’s irked when Bushara demands an apology as part of the compromise for doubting her and storms off again. Bachu’s mother is increasingly worried and confides in his husband who has been having recurring health problems lately at gulf. He starts trying to come home on the Vande Bharath flight and waits for an opportunity to get a seat allotted.

Trouble starts when the masks supplied by Bachu start turning out to be of inferior quality and starts getting damaged. Vijeesh’s manager who bought the consignment calls up Bachu and asks him to pay back the money and take the material or face legal action. Bachu tries different ways to repair the damaged masks to avoid any hassles. He even tries to speak to the person who supplied him with the masks in the first place but can’t see him since the latter is quarantined after antigen test again. Meanwhile he is under pressure to take back the jewelry also since his friend’s wife sumi is expected to go to her home soon for delivery and can’t be seen without the ornaments. Bachu gets into an argument with his father who scolds him over the jewelry issue and speaks harshly to him. His father finally tells him he is coming back for good soon on the Vande Bharath flight and will speak to him later. Running out of options, Bachu meets Ismail and promises him that he will take up the employment offer in gulf but borrows some money from him for his needs. On his way back after getting the pledged ornaments back with the money, he is pulled up by police for not wearing mask inside the car. While he is arguing with the police, he gets a call on his phone. When His friend attends the call, he learns that Bachu’s father has passed away in the gulf due to heart attack, a day before he was supposed to travel back. Bachu’s family is shattered by the news, and they wait for his body to arrive back for proper cremation. Rashid also visits their house and patches up with Bushara under the new circumstances. Baanu comes back from Gulf with her kid, having been separated from his husband, and reminiscences with Bachu about his father.

The situation gets further complicated when the number of covid cases rises drastically in the gulf and the transport of bodies gets suspended temporarily. Bachu gets under pressure to allow the body to be cremated there since the body must be cremated as soon as possible after death under his religions practice. Due to his mothers last wish of seeing his father one last time, Bachu starts trying to influence various persons and bring the body back to India, since his father was not tested covid positive at the time of death. After 2-3 days of uncertainty, he successfully manages to get clearance to get the body back. However, the health authorities who visit his house warn him that only 5 people can receive the body from airport, must take it directly to cremation and cannot have any senior citizens in the area due to protocol issues. After receiving the body, while coming back Bachu makes the ambulance stop in front of his house for his mother to get a last glimpse of his father, but the medical staff are adamant not to let her due to the protocol. Things get tense as the medical staff and the locals with Bachu get into a heated argument, but finally they proceed with the body once Bachu’s mother asks them to proceed without showing the body, to avoid any further issue. In the end it’s shown that Bachu’s mother was indeed allowed to visit the cremation ground wearing the covid PPE where she and Bachu perform the last rites for his father peacefully.

In an epilogue, after 7 months its shown that Bachu and Baanu are together now with the kid and shows Bachu smiling sarcastically as they pass through an election rally of huge crowd without any so-called protocol restrictions.
