architects to do list
Hi Ivo -- i've noticed a few of your edits recently, and then just now after starting architect article about Joseph F. Booten (just barely started) i notice your interesting to do list including an architect name list which happens to link there. I don't recognize most of those architect names, wonder where that is from? I've been finding it useful for NRHP article development purposes, to start articles on associated architects, builders, engineers, at least those having 5 or more NRHP works, working from this list. It turns out that the correct name is Booton not Booten, by the way, in this case. Glad to see you contributing occasionally; hope it is not just depressing finding past work ripped out, which happens sometimes. I really did mean my apologies about being difficult in some past editing back-and-forths. I appreciate more and more your priorities, when you were editing actively. Hope you are well. cheers, --doncram 22:40, 17 September 2012 (UTC)
- You know, it's Wikipedia, so I try not to take stuff too personally - if I see something drastic, I'll make a note on the talk page so other editors can see what I thought and move on - I don't have nearly the time required to chase after destroyers of worlds - if I can help it. Things are going to get ripped apart, I'll live :-) The architects mostly come from NRHP entries, maybe a few other places. Thanks for starting up the Booten article. Your hard work is appreciated. Replaceable fair use File:Varicolored lupine.JPEG
Thanks for uploading File:Varicolored lupine.JPEG. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails the first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:49, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
Re: Some work and a request
Hi Ivo, I looked at it quickly and it seemd neutral to me (though I must confess it was a topic I had not heard of before, so I do not know if it is comprehensive in its covereage). I thought the lead could be expanded a bit, and wondered if there was more reaction to the withdrawal of the policy (tax?) that could be added to the article. If there are opinion pieces on how this was good (stopping government run amok) or bad (Got Milk? works, why not try "Got a real tree?") or whatever. Hope this helps and sorry to be slow, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:06, 28 September 2012 (UTC)
DYK for Christmas tree production in Denmark
On 29 September 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Christmas tree production in Denmark, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the most popular species for Christmas trees in Denmark and most of Europe is the Nordmann fir? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Christmas tree production in Denmark. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Christmas tree promotion draft
Hi, i found my way to your draft article on the Christmas tree promotion, and found it fascinating. I think it's ready for mainspace. Or it could be saved up for a December 1 or day-after-thanksgiving or some other date special, with a DYK. If you are not aware, there are some holiday-specific DYKs that are created in advance and saved up. There's one wonky sentence ("The program also specified that if a fee over 20 cents per tree or under 10 cents per tree it would require the approval of the majority of producers and importers") to be fixed, that's the only problem i see. Hope this helps. cheers, --doncram 21:42, 3 October 2012 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Silver lupine.jpeg
Thanks for uploading File:Silver lupine.jpeg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.
If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Wisconsin Heights Battle site question
I'm a Black Hawk War fan and local boy - intimately familiar with every foot of the Wisconsin Heights battle site to the Wisconsin River from hunting, trapping, working, and Boy Scouting in the very location of the area, and I noticed that on this Wiki page: Battle_of_Wisconsin_Heightsthe following appears:
The early 20th-century book Wisconsin in Three Centuries was already calling the battle a "massacre" in 1906.[10] Specifically, it cited an incident in which captured warriors and civilians from Black Hawk's band were slaughtered by a group of 300 Menominee, who had aligned with the white militia.[10] In addition, as many were drowned trying to cross the Wisconsin as were killed and captured during the battle.
I'm relatively new at editing Wiki, but it appears that you inserted this on 2 August 2007.
The reference led to the right place, the book Wisconsin in Three Centuries, 1634-1905, Volume 2 By Henry Colin Campbell and the content in the article was accurate to the book, but it appears that the book is in error (pps 200 - 201). In fact, Campbell appears to be grossly confused as to which battle he is talking about. It's almost as if his 1906 word processor failed him! The clue is that on the end of the second paragraph (emphasis added and parentheses mine)
But to return to the pursuit of the fugitive savages. Toward the evening of the 21st, within less than two miles of the Wisconsin, Black Hawk and Neapope, his second in command, with forty braves, tried to cover the flight of the main body of Indians across the river by attacking both flanks of the army. The Indians, repulsed, hid in the tall grass, and for a half hour exchanged musket shots with the soldiers. Both sides suffered somewhat, but a bayonet charge drove the savages back to higher ground, where they joined another body of Indians, and all fell back toward the river. They took refuge in swampy ground along the river, ground fringed with timber, and General Henry deemed it wise not to press the attack that night. (all this is true so far) In the evening, at dusk, many of the fugitives, mostly women, old men and children, tried to cross the Mississippi. (this is the astonishing part - how did the Mississippi get in here?) With few exceptions, they were noncombatants and they hoped that they would be allowed to traverse the mouth of the Wisconsin and attain the west shore of the Mississippi without being molested from Fort Crawford. Their hope was in vain. Lieutenant Ritner and a small detachment of regulars, stationed a short distance above the fort, fired upon them. Fifteen men were killed and thirty-two women and children and four men were captured. Almost as many more were drowned. All except about ten of the survivors perished of hunger or were killed by a party of three hundred Menominee Indians under Colonel Stambaugh and other officers. This encounter is called the battle of Wisconsin Heights, but it was a massacre rather than a battle.
This is grossly confused. The Wisconsin Heights Battle was fought on the late afternoon and evening of the 21st. The army, fearing (rightly so) that their powder would get wet and so useless) never pursued the Indians through the swamp to the river. I've been in that swamp - it's wet, even as drained as it is now. They camped and then the next day went to the river to find their quarry gone across the river. I've forded the river there - it's pretty shallow. At most times of the summer about knee deep and wide, so not so much current. Why the Army didn't pursue them, I can't explain. But they didn't.
No original account mentions any non-combatants killed or participating in the account of the Wisconsin Heights Battle.
To my knowledge, Ritner was stationed out of Fort Crawford and never got farther up the Wisconsin than about the location of Brunet's ferry where he shot up the canoes coming down river.
So, you did a faithful job of interpreting Campbell, but he had some sort of hiccup in his book.
I'd like to edit this, but wanted to give you a head's up first.

Illinois Carnegie libraries
Hi --As another editor notes above, you're a missing Wikipedian. I hope you'll return to edit. One topic that I wonder if you would edit in, or comment upon, is duplication between Illinois Carnegie Libraries Multiple Property Submission article (created by you in 2007, and B-class) versus List of Carnegie libraries in Illinois. Back in 2007 and for some years onward, I think there was a consensus view that NRHP Multiple Property Submissions were valid Wikipedia article topics, but I and some others later came around to the view that an MPS is a document, perhaps booklength but nonetheless a document, and we don't usually write articles about documents (and usually not about books). The subject of an MPS is very often a clearly valid topic, though, with the MPS document being a major source to use. I thought about suggesting a Requested Move to move this to a title about Carnegie libraries in Illinois, but then I see that List of Carnegie libraries in Illinois is an article already, and in fact is fairly old (created by Mcmillin24 in 2009, and list-class). A way to discuss this is to make a merger proposal, which I could do, but I'd rather obtain your participation first, perhaps an approval for a merger to go ahead, rather than my proceeding with a merger that you might not see until later. Could you comment here and ping me, or comment at my Talk page or at the Talk pages of the articles?
By the way I came across the duplication when an edit at Pond and Pond architects brought me there, and I noticed that it oddly lists Illinois Carnegie Libraries Multiple Property Submission as a work, rather than the specific one or more Illinois Carnegie libraries they designed. (The MPS submission is a document, a work of its authors, who do not include Pond and Pond.)
Since the MPS article (Illinois Carnegie Libraries Multiple Property Submission) is older, I want to suggest that the merger be to it, preserving the record of IvoShandor having created the article. And I would suggest the article title would be "Carnegie libraries in Illinois" because a combined article would be more than a list, although it would naturally include the list. Perhaps a history merge could be done to bring in the edit history of the list-article, or it could just be noted that the edit history remains with the redirect. Or, I'd suggest the MPS article be moved to the "Carnegie libraries in Illinois" name, with the list-article kept separate but with each linking to the other.
I am ccing this by ping to User:Mcmillin24, and editors User:DanTD, User:Ntsimp, and User:Nyttend (who are NRHP editors that I notice each made multiple edits to the List of Carnegie libraries in Illinois), in hopes they might comment here too. There is no rush to make this merger or move, IMHO, but I do currently think one merged article would be best, with a rename and linking being my second choice. Sincerely, --doncram 21:35, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

March Madness 2017
G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2019 US Banknote Contest
US Banknote Contest | ||
---|---|---|
November-December 2019 | ||
There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here |
