English: Family tombstone, Dalry Cemetery This tombstone in what was a relatively poor working-class district of Edinburgh is testimony to the appalling mortality rate in the Victorian period, It commemorates several children who pre-deceased their parents. The inscription reads: Erected by John Thom coal merchant in memory of Robert, died 16 June 1855, aged 3 years 3 months, John, died 23 October 1859, aged 2 years 1 month, Margaret, died 6 September 1872, aged 29, Jane Miller Thom, died 10th January 1874, aged 20 and Euphemia Marr, wife, died 18 November 1881, aged 66.
