The 2025 Indian Premier League will be the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league held in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The Auction for the 2025 season will be the 6th IPL mega-auction[1][2] after 2008,[3] 2011,[4] 2014,[5] 2018[6] and 2022.[7] In a mega-auction, most of the players, apart from a selection of retained players, will return to the auction pool. The current IPL system is to hold a mega-auction once every three years, with mini auctions being held in the intermediate seasons.[8][9]

The rules and regulations for the 2025 auction were announced on 29 September 2024.[10][11] The mega-auction will be held on 24 and 25 November 2024 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.[12] A total of 1,574 players registered for the auction.[13] A total of 574 players will be featured in the mega auction.[14] In November 2024, Mallika Sagar was appointed as the auctioneer to host the 2025 Indian Premier League auction.[15][16]

[edit]

Retention policy

[edit]

The ten IPL franchise teams could retain a maximum of six players from their squad, which is the highest in the history of IPL mega-auctions. Five player retentions and one "Right To Match (RTM)" option is available for each franchise. Out of the six retentions a maximum of five capped players (including Indian and overseas players) could be retained and a maximum of two uncapped players could be retained.[19][20]

Retained players

[edit]

The franchises were required to submit their retention lists before 5 PM IST on 31 October 2024.[21][22]

Auction

[edit]

The auction purse for each franchise is set at 120 crore (US$14 million), the highest in the history of IPL.[33] The salary cap of a player would consist of auction purse, incremental performance pay and match fees. Each playing member (including the Impact player) will get a match fee of 7.5 lakh (US$9,000) in addition to their auctioned price, first such instance in the IPL.[34]

Any overseas player will have to register for the mega-auction. Overseas players failing to register for the mega-auction would be become ineligible to participate in the following year's mini auction as well.[35] If an auctioned player withdraws before the season commences, they would be banned from IPL for the next two years.[36] Any Indian capped player who hasn't played in the starting XI in international cricket (Test, ODI, T20I) in the preceding five calendar years or doesn't have a central contract with the BCCI will become an uncapped player for the auction.[37][38][39][40]
