I was on 4chan everyday during this time and still am to this day and can confirm that Kek is seen in exactly this way. Someone tried to add that Kek comes from World of Warcraft’s rendering of “Lol”. This is a common misconception. While WoW did do this, Kek was also used in a previous blizzard game to mean “lol” - StarCraft. This is because “Kek” was a S Korean Variant of the western “Lol”'
