On 6 July 2018 an interim report was issued by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Various chlorinate organic chemicals (dichloroacetic acid, trichloroacetic acid, chlorophenol, dichlorophenol, bornyl chloride, chloral hydrate etc.) were found in samples, along with residues of explosive, but the designated laboratory 03 stated that no CWC-scheduled chemicals or nerve agent related chemicals were detected and that it has not been ascertained whether or not the chlorinated chemicals found were used in a chemical attack.

There was evidence of chlorine-related chemicals in the basement of a building where large numbers of casualties were reported. The report stated that they have not ascertained whether or not the chlorinate organic chemicals had been used in an attack. The report stated the OPCW team was "not able to enter Douma for almost a week after its arrival, owing to the high security risks to the team, which included the presence of unexploded ordnance, explosives, and sleeper cells still suspected of being active in Douma." At one location, the OPCW team was not provided the access requested by the team to some apartments within the building, which were closed at the time. The Syrian representatives stated that they did not have the authority to force entry into the locked apartments. The team had full access to other areas of interest within the same building. No evidence supported Syrian regime claims of rebel production of chemical weapons. There was also no evidence to support the theory that nerve agents such as sarin were used in this attack, with the OPCW report stating "no organophosphorus nerve agents or their degradation products" had been detected.

== Background == Use of chemical weapons in the Syrian Civil War The Syrian Arab Republic's forces have used chemical weapons many times before - according to Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and United Nations investigations. Human Rights Watch has documented 85 chemical weapons attacks in Syria since 2013.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2018/04/16/how-many-chemical-attacks-have-been-documented-in-syria-infographic/#dd3f6265a1ed|title=How Many Chemical Attacks Have Been Documented In Syria?
