Tim Flach is a British photographer famous for his photographs of animals. He has published several books of photographs.

Life

Flach was born in London, where he works and lives with his wife and son.[1][2] He studied Communications Design at the North East London Polytechnic (1977-80), and then Photography and Painted Structures at Central St. Martins (1982-83).[3]

Work

Flach’s work is concerned with how the anthropocentric view of animals informs debates around science, philosophy and ethics.[4] Flach is known for his use of the principles of human portraiture to engage with debates on anthropocentrism.[5] He believes that focusing on the animal’s personality allows him to connect the viewer with the subject of the photograph.[6]

For his book Endangered, published in 2017, he also photographed some wild animals in their natural habitat.[7]

His work has been commissioned and featured by publications such as National Geographic,[8] Creative Review,[9] The New York Times,[10] The Guardian[11] and The New Scientist.[12] He has lectured at universities worldwide,[13] as well as at institutions such as the Zoological Society of London[14] and the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.[15] He has released five books to date: Equus (2008), Dogs: Gods (2010), More than Human (2012), Evolution (2013) and Endangered (2017).
