{{unk|ro}}. Probably from {{der|ro|qsb-bal|-}}, akin to {{cog|sq|murgash}}. The word seems to also coincide with several similar words in nearby Slavic languages, such as Bulgarian {{m|bg|мургав}}, but the relation between them is unclear. Other less probable theories have included a Greek root *''μουρικος'', perhaps through a Latin intermediate *''moricus'', instead of {{m|la|morulus}}, or a Greek root ''ἀμόργη'' ("remains of olives") through Latin {{m|la|amurca}}. However, the fact that it is present in the other Eastern Romance languages such as Aromanian {{m|rup|murgu}} and Megleno-Romanian {{m|ro|murg}}, and is paired with an initial ''a'' to form the related word {{m|ro|amurg}}, seems to indicate it is probably an older and inherited word of some kind (compare {{m|ro|acasă}}, {{m|ro|afund}}, {{m|ro|aminte}}), rather than a later Slavic borrowing.
