Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *tiːl) : semantic (man, person) + phonetic (OC *tiːl, *til) – a person lowering themselves, bowing.

Etymology

Cognate with (OC *tiːlʔ, “bottom”), (OC *tiːl, *tiːlʔ, *tiːls, “root of a tree; base”), Tibetan མཐིལ (mthil, bottom; floor) (Schuessler, 2007).
