Etymology

Borrowed from French pédéraste, from Ancient Greek παιδεραστής (paiderastḗs, lover of boys), from παῖς (paîs, boy) and ἐραστής (erastḗs, lover).

Pronunciation

  • Lua error in Module:parameters at line 360: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "US" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. IPA(key): /ˈpɛd.ɚ.ɹæst/, /ˈpi.də.ɹæst/
  • enPR: pĕd'ə-răst'

Noun

pederast (plural pederasts)

  1. A man who is engaged in an erotic relationship with an adolescent boy; a practitioner of pederasty.
    Synonym: (literary, archaic) Uranian

Usage notes

  • The term pederast has sometimes been incorrectly used to describe men sexually involved with prepubescent girls, or child-rapists who do not have any ongoing relationship with the child. For an adult fixated on only sexual involvement with prepubescent children, or for heterosexual child-eroticism, pedophile is used instead. Note that pedophile and pedophilia refer only to the desire, not to the act, so pedophiles are not necessarily sexually involved with children. The female equivalent is a korephile.
