Etymology

From a Southeast Asian language, perhaps Malay mangga or a Tai word (Wei, 2000). The second character (guǒ, “fruit”) is a phono-semantic matching or a literal translation.

First attested in 廣東通志初稿 [1535] (Yang, 1987):

芒果外國鵝子新會香山 [Classical Chinese, trad.]
芒果外国鹅子新会香山 [Classical Chinese, simp.]
Mángguǒ, zhǒng chuán wàiguó, shí dà rú ézǐ zhuàng, shēng zé suān, shú zé tián, wéi Xīnhuì, Xiāngshān yǒu zhī. [Pinyin]
