From Dutch maarschalk (compare Afrikaans maarskalk), from Middle Dutch maerschalc, maerscalc, marscalc, from Old Dutch mariskalk, from Proto-West Germanic *marhaskalk (compare French maréchal), from Proto-Germanic *marhaz (horse) + *skalkaz (servant, knight).
