[edit]From Middle Dutch vri, from Old Dutch frī, from Proto-West Germanic *frī, from Proto-Germanic *frijaz, from Proto-Indo-European *priHós, a derivation from *preyH- (“to be fond of”). Related to vrijen (“to make love”), vrijdag (“Friday”), vriend (“friend”), and vrede (“peace”).
