Se caracteriza por el bajo todo el contenido de [[carbono]] (entre 0,05% y 0,25%), siendo una de las variedades, de uso comercial, con mucha menos pureza en [[hierro]]. Es [[Dureza|duro]], [[Maleabilidad|maleable]] y fácilmente [[Aleación|aleable]] con otros [[metal]]es, sin embargo es relativamente, y poco apto para ser utilizado en la confección de [[Teoría de placas y láminas|lámina]]s, tales como [[espada]]s, etc. El hierro forjado ha sido empleado durante miles de años, y ha sido la composición más habitual del "hierro" tal como se ha conocido a lo largo de la historia.
 
Tradicionalmente, el hierro forjado ha sido obtenido a partir del [[mineral]] de [[hierro]] calentado a altas temperaturas en una forja. Luego, se procedía a golpearlo, en un proceso en el que se buscaba eliminar las impurezas y [[Escoria
