राजीव गांधी खेल रत्न भारत में दिया जाने वाला सबसे बड़ा खेल पुरस्कार है। इस पुरस्कार को भारत के भूतपूर्व प्रधानमंत्री श्री राजीव गांधी के नाम पर रखा गया है, जिन्होंने १९८४ से १९८९ तक प्रधानमंत्री कार्यालय में सेवा की। यह प्रतिवर्ष खेल एवं युवा मंत्रालय द्वारा प्रदान किया जाता है। प्राप्तकर्ताओं को मंत्रालय द्वारा गठित एक समिति द्वारा चुना जाता है और उन्हें अंतर्राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर पिछले चार साल की अवधि में खेल क्षेत्र में शानदार और सबसे उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन के लिए सम्मानित किया जाता है। इस पुरस्कार मे एक पदक, एक प्रशस्ति पत्र और नगद राशि पुरस्कृत व्यक्ति को दिये जाते है। सन् २०१८ में यह राशी ७.५ लाख रुपये थी।[2] सम्मानित व्यक्तियों को रेलवे की मुफ्त पास सुविधा प्रदान की जाती है जिसके तहत राजीव गांधी खेल रत्न पुरस्कार एवं ध्यानचंद पुरस्कार विजेता राजधानी या शताब्दी गाड़ियों में प्रथम और द्वितीय श्रेणी वातानुकूलित कोचों में मुफ्त में यात्रा कर सकते हैं।[3]

१९९१-९२ में स्थापित यह पुरस्कार पहले किसी खिलाड़ी को एक वर्ष में शानदार प्रदर्शन के लिए दिया जाता था। २०१४ की पुरस्कार चयन समिति द्वारा दिए गए सुझावों के आधार पर, मंत्रालय ने चार वर्षों की अवधि में प्रदर्शन पर विचार करने के लिए फरवरी २०१५ में मानदंडों को संशोधित किया। किसी दिए गए वर्ष के लिए नामांकन ३० अप्रैल तक या अप्रैल के अंतिम कार्य दिवस तक स्वीकार किए जाते हैं, जिसमें एक खेल परकार के दो खिलाड़ियों से अधिक नामांकिन नहीं कर सकते है। एक बारह सदस्यीय समिति ओलंपिक खेलों, पैरालम्पिक खेलों, एशियाई खेलों और राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों जैसे विभिन्न अंतर्राष्ट्रीय आयोजनों में एक खिलाड़ी के प्रदर्शन का मूल्यांकन करती है। समिति बाद में खेल एवं युवा राज्यमंत्री के पास अपनी मंजूरी के लिए अपनी सिफारिशें भेजती है।

इस पुरस्कार के पहले प्राप्तकर्ता शतरंज के ग्रैंडमास्टर विश्वनाथन आनंद थे, जिन्हें वर्ष १९९१-९२ में अपने प्रदर्शन के लिए सम्मानित किया गया था। २००१ में, निशानेबाज अभिनव बिंद्रा, जो १८ वर्ष की आयु के थे, पुरस्कार के सबसे कम उम्र के प्राप्तकर्ता बने।[4] आमतौर पर यह पुरस्कार एक वर्ष में केवल एक खिलाड़ी को सम्मानित किया जाता है, जिसमें कुछ अपवाद बने हैं (१९९३-९४, २००२, २००९, २०१२, २०१६, २०१७, २०१८ और २०१९) जब एक वर्ष में कई प्राप्तकर्ता सम्मानित किए गए थे। २०१९ के अनुसार अड़तीस प्राप्तकर्ता हुए हैं जो चौदह खेलों में से हैं: एथलेटिक्स, बैडमिंटन, बिलियर्ड्स, बॉक्सिंग, शतरंज, क्रिकेट, फील्ड हॉकी, जिमनास्टिक्स, शूटिंग, स्नूकर, टेनिस, कुश्ती, भारोत्तोलन और नौका दौड़। इस पुरस्कार के सबसे हालिया प्राप्तकर्ता पैरा-एथलीट दीपा मलिक और पहलवान बजरंग पूनिया हैं।
