ウィリアム・フォーセル・カービー

ウィリアム・フォーセル・カービー（William Forsell Kirby、1844年1月14日 - 1912年11月20日）はイギリスの昆虫学者である。ロンドン自然史博物館で働いた。昆虫学の著作の他に少年向けの博物学の著書を執筆した。フィンランドの民族叙事詩、カレワラなど北欧神話の翻訳も行った。

略歴

ロンドンの銀行家の家で生まれた。家庭教師から教育を受けた。子供時代から蝶などに興味を持ち、18歳で、Manual of European Butterfliesという著作を出版した。1867年に王立ダブリン協会の博物館の学芸員となり、『昼行性鱗翅目のシノニム目録』（Synonymic Catalogue of Diurnal Lepidoptera :1871; 補遺版 1877)を出版した。.

1879年に、昆虫学者、フレドリック・スミス（Frederick Smith）が没したので、ロンドン自然史博物館の学芸員の仕事を継いで、1909年までその仕事を続けた。この間、Rhopalocera Exotica (1887–1897) や Elementary Text-book of Entomologyなどを執筆した。

自然科学の著作の他に、北欧やオリエントの神話、民話に興味を持ち、フィンランドの民族叙事詩、カレワラなどを英訳し、同時代や後代の作家に影響を与えた。
