Motivation
editArtist files are: Collections of small-sized documents relating to the visual arts that are collected and arranged for the purposes of research. Often, these materials fail to receive individual full-level cataloging, and therefore are not found in libraries finding aids, nor are they considered “archival”. See ARLIS Artist Files Group for additional information.
We are adding artists and photographers to Wikidata, many of which have valuable research material found in libraries and archives that cannot be individually cataloged, known as Artist Files or Vertical Files. Wikidata has items for each of the above as artist files Q84851343 & vertical file Q60730271. Currently there is no way to connect the artists to these research collections, which would be useful for GLAM institutions to know who has research material of this artist and could be expert on the artist’s work, or has heirs/copyright holder information, and for individual scholars, etc. - Aceven (talk) 14:50, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- Comment - (Full disclosure: I'm working with the Smithsonian Institution on Wikimedia projects, so this is to give some context and further information, as I will not be voting support/oppose). The closest parallel to this currently is probably archives at (P485) and the qualifiers that it uses would be useful to elaborate on here. The most popular qualifiers used for archives at (P485) that may be worth examination, as to how useful they might be for this new property:
- inventory number (P217) - useful
- subject named as (P1810) - useful
- described at URL (P973) - very useful
- level of description (P6224) - questionable
- title (P1476) - questionable
- applies to part, aspect, or form (P518) - questionable
- In the case of a Smithsonian record, for example, Malcolm Brown can be found here. One possible set of qualifiers might be:
- has artist file in -> Smithsonian American Art and Portrait Gallery Library (Q98665879)
- inventory number (P217) - "SILAF_27233"
- subject named as (P1810) - "Malcolm Brown, 1931-"
- described at URL (P973) - "https://collections.si.edu/search/detail/edanmdm:SILAF_27233"
- has artist file in -> Smithsonian American Art and Portrait Gallery Library (Q98665879)
- Therefore, we might want to add this to the proposal, or add these to the final property if approved. Courtesy ping: @Aceven: Thanks. -- Fuzheado (talk) 14:41, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- Strong support -- helpful and needed. "Has artist files at" or "Artist files at", to align with artist file (Q84851343) and mirror archives at (P485)? ASR06 (talk) 16:51, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
- Strong support This property would be immediately useful for collaboration between art libraries using Wikidata and is clearly distinct from archives at (P485) and has works in the collection (P6379). To Fuzheado's list of possible qualifiers I would add collection (P195) and collection creator (P6241), also used by archives at (P485). For instance the Frick Art Reference Library holds artist files originally created MoMA, and I expect other institution's may have artist files that may be organized by collection or collection creator. +1 to ASR06's suggestion of "has artist files at" or "artist files at" as the label (in lieu of "has artist file in") as the "allowed values" of the property are institutions that an artist file would be at (as opposed to collections that an artist file would be in). --Infopetal (talk) 21:19, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- ASR06 and Infopetal: For the label, agree that "at" is a better fit than "in". I drafted the label in the singular: artist file rather than files. Thoughts on that piece? The Smithsonian collections often have multiple files for a single artist or gallery, but not always. I don't have a preference, so the user community input is important. - Use of artist files would mirror the genre headings used by Library of Congress and the Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus. Berthoudh
- Files plural also makes sense to me because of the points raised here: it's plausible an institution might have more than one file for an artist or gallery (the Frick does, too) and it mirrors relevant examples from LC/AAT as well as archives at (P485) and has works in the collection (P6379). --Infopetal (talk) 00:17, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

- Support, an important property for art research; definitely meaningful and distinct from archives and published resources. Artist files are well established as an area of professional activity and discourse at e.g. Art Libraries Society of North America, Artist Files Special Interest Group. - @Aceven, Fuzheado, ASR06, Berthoudh, Infopetal, Arbnos: Done as artist files at (P9493). UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 20:50, 28 April 2021 (UTC)
