duplicating information

edit

The Blind Leading the Blind (Q1192570) is a painting that has two properties that contain identical information: depicts Iconclass notation (P1257) 31A41111 as well as depicts (P180) the blind leading the blind (Q1565024). Because the blind leading the blind (Q1565024) already has the property Iconclass notation (P1256) 31A41111, there's no additional informational value gained from having both depicts Iconclass notation (P1257) and depicts (P180) for this painting. I know there are many places now where we don't have a clear Iconclass 1-to-1 mapping with Wikidata and so it's useful to have both properties. But when we do have a Wikidata entity for all Iconclasses, we should deprecate the Iconclass properties and just use depicts (P180). Runner1928 (talk) 16:23, 22 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

This was addressed at WD:Property proposal/Archive/21#P1257. And I'd be overhappy if we replaced the Iconclass system which is anything but perfect IMHO. Though they state that they have 28,000 definitions which is a nice bunch to create!
Commons often has a more finely graduated classification of iconography in its categories. I good begin might be do create items for the useful categories, add Iconclass notation (P1256) to them and make up the classification here with subclass of (P279) probably and to make up templates on Commons that retrieve and display the Iconclass notation. --Marsupium (talk) 13:00, 24 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Regex is incorrect

edit

Wikidata:Database_reports/Constraint_violations/P1257#"Format"_violations contains a whole bunch of false positives. Multichill (talk) 10:40, 20 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Multichill: Gymel has made pivotal improvements to the pattern in 2015 for Iconclass notation (P1256). I've now added support for:
  • “bracketed text” containing digits,
  • containing Unicode letters and
  • appearance of 3 or 4 digits after the bracket
and brought all that here together with:
  • “bracketed text” starting with lowercase (I don't see it contradicts any specification) and
  • starting with "." which allows Madonna with Canon Joris van der Paele (Q2480921)depicts Iconclass notation (P1257)61B2(...)12 from https://rkd.nl/en/explore/images/2149. This is probably against the intent of Iconclass documented here, but obviously useful, used and imported here.
I hope that will remove the false positives, I hope it's   Fixed. --Marsupium (talk) 20:16, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
Changed it again to allow for these notations. Hope the changes were correct. --Kristbaum (talk) 13:33, 23 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! It has turned out there can even be 5 digits after that "+" like in 48(+76112). I've updated this property and Iconclass notation (P1256) and the reference at Property talk:P1256#For reference: regex extrema. --Marsupium (talk) 10:41, 19 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Iconclass-notations for artworks without a picture

edit

Pori Art Museum has a collection of over 2000 items listed on wikidata, but most of them are without a picture (due to copyrights). Wikidata requirement (flagged error message) is a picture for an item with statement Depicts iconclass notation. It would be more informative about the artwork, if we still could add that statementwithout an error message. Would it be possible to chance that picture requirement? --SO 08:06, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Genre required

edit

Also for the genre required for artworks with iconclass notations might be a problem with contemporary art. Most contemporary artworks aren`t so easily categorised.--SO 09:29, 18 February 2021 (UTC)
