Global sysop and Translate extension

Hello, see [1]. Did you know that marking the page for translation overwrites all translations immediately? Did you ask if someone is willing to import the old translations immediately? I see no action in the last 4 hours. --Nemo 07:56, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Nemo, I've replied there. Mathonius (talk) 11:36, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Mathonius, why did you delete my picture - was thought for demonstration in school. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wmhlz (talk)

Hello Wmhlz, there's a separate, more suitable media repository called Wikimedia Commons. You could upload your pictures there. Mathonius (talk) 10:20, 10 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unified login - problem

Hello, I'd like to usurp the account User:Summergirl on nlwiki to create an unified login. Can you help me please? --Summergirl (talk) 13:04, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Summergirl, you might be interested in this overview of the request pages. To request the usurpation of an account on nl.wikipedia, please follow these instructions:
  • Log in with your account named "Summergirl".
  • Add something along the lines of "I confirm that I wish to usurp 'Summergirl' @ nlwiki" on your talk page.
  • Go to w:nl:WP:USURP, request the usurpation, and please add a confirmation link.
A local bureaucrat will ask you to wait for two weeks, and he will then inform the current owner of the nlwiki account. After this waiting period, your request will be fulfilled if no one has objected by then. Please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck, Mathonius (talk) 18:56, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. --Summergirl (talk) 23:12, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Differences

Hi, Curious to know What was the difference between those two maps? I tried to find... they just look like each other...:)--KhabarNegar 21:59, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi KhabarNegar, thanks for your message. I reverted a user from the Simple English Wikipedia known as the "Pakistan IP Editor" or the "map replacement guy" (at least that's what I call him). This time, he replaced File:People's Republic of China (orthographic projection).svg with File:China in its region (claimed hatched).svg. He often replaces such maps on multiple projects, see for example these edits. I'm not sure why he does this, but usually his edits don't add anything valuable and sometimes it's just plain POV or blatantly wrong: for example, on this page there was a red map with the description "territorial claims in light green". I reverted all of his edits to make sure he didn't add any false information anywhere. Furthermore, I think it's up to the local communities to choose one of the maps. Don't hesitate to undo any revert of mine if you feel like the other map was better. Greetings, Mathonius (talk) 23:30, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

For fixing my tag elsewhere :) I must pay more attention! --Herby talk thyme 17:38, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

You're very welcome! I think they should simply rename their template for speedy deletions. I keep making the same mistake... Mathonius (talk) 18:02, 10 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Global sysop usage

Hi Mathonius! Thank you for helping to maintain the Simple English Wiktionary! However, please be wary that there is a recent change to the policy on using the tools on that wiki for global sysops. As stated on deletion pages, please leave usual deletions and blocks to local administrators unless there is an emergency. So in the future, please do tag pages with {{delete}} instead of deleting the page directly. Thank you! --Hydriz (talk) 12:15, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Interesting (as a TPW). It really would be better/simpler to either allow or disallow. From my point of view I follow "trouble" - I am rarely very aware of where exactly I am and know that I either have the buttons or don't. Feel free to ignore me. --Herby talk thyme 12:40, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello Hydriz, thanks for your message. I personally think it would be more efficient to let global sysops help with deleting those pages and blocking those spambots. However, of course, your community is key here, and I'll try to keep your decision and your policy in mind from now on. Hydriz, I've recently approached the Simple English Wiktionary in two different ways: on 9 January, I only blocked the spambots (for two hours to prevent them from continuing to add spam) and tagged the pages; on 11 January, I blocked the spambots and deleted the pages as well. Would your community also mind the first approach? Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 17:08, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) Actually, from my point of view, (if I can intervene) I think spambots in action (and not vandalism pages/nonsense etc.) can be considered as an emergency and simple.wikt (like en.wikiveristy) seems to be very bombarded from them. Better if they are blocked globally, but sometimes, a local block works well too. Particularly if the IP/new user persists, and Mathonius, IMHO limited himself to perform useful and right blocks there, under these points. --Frigotoni ...i'm here; 17:20, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
See simple:wikt:MediaWiki:Blockiptext, simple:wikt:MediaWiki:Confirmdeletetext, simple:wikt:Wiktionary:Administrators#Non-regular_administrators, simple:wikt:Wiktionary:Simple_talk/Archive_11#Global_sysops, etc. The consensus has been to only allow emergency actions. Otherwise, I think the community might opt-out if the rules for GSs (which are explicitly written on Special:Block and the deletion interface) are not followed. πr2 (tc) 17:49, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I know that I've always done stuff there, even non-urgent, because of the link on WT:A which pie changed six days ago. SimpleWT should just opt-out or let GS act whenever IMO, so long as it isn't controversial stuff. It doesn't matter who does it if it gets done... Ajraddatz (Talk) 17:56, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
(moar unwanted comments:) When I abused my rights for the first time there, someone asked me whether I hadn't seen the warning on Blockiptext or so. And no, I hadn't, because my interface language was set to something else than the standard so the message did not show up. After that I of course stopped to do non-urgent actions there. --MF-W 18:05, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh well, that's true as well. I actually realized it just now, simply because of Quentinv57's action I requested (i.e. to change language on every projects). Anyway, I partly agree with Ajr: if they don't want GSs to perform block/delete actions there, just ask to opt-out. (Btw, while I am at it, policy, or something like this, should be changed. I mean, some wikis might be opted-out, where there are more than six sysops active, others should be opted-in).--Frigotoni ...i'm here; 18:21, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
@Ajraddatz: I changed that page because there was some discussion on IRC about a particular global sysop's actions on simple.wiktionary and on Meta. (The user deleted a non-spam/vandalism page [which I admit was not appropriate for Simple Wiktionary] and then, when the user who created the page asked why it was deleted on Meta, blocked the creator of the page.) πr2 (tc) 18:42, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Not exactly. The creator has attacked the blocking global sysop and spammed his talk page before. Vogone (talk) 20:09, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oops, sorry, also to clarify: the block was on Meta, but the deletion was on simple.wiktionary. πr2 (tc) 02:22, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't want the Simple English Wiktionary to opt-out, because that would make it impossible for global sysops to help, even if there is an emergency. Anyway, I think it's up to the local communities to decide how they'd like global sysops to help out, hence my question about the different ways to approach this. Mathonius (talk) 19:47, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps a discussion on simple:wikt:Project:Simple talk is in order. πr2 (tc) 02:22, 13 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Just to note, I have just added a note to the discussion page as pointed out by PiRSquared17. Please feel free to comment there as a global sysop. Just a point to note that I don't intend to get the Simple English Wiktionary opted out of the global sysop wikiset, but rather enforce the rule of using the tools only in emergency cases/under the authorization of a local administrator. Thanks for all your feedback though! --Hydriz (talk) 09:45, 16 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Abuse Filter

I started refusing to store such a user page in de-Wikibooks by Abuse Filter 9. This filter checks namespace 2 or 3 (user, user talk) if the edit contains text like this:

  • one of the English words to, age, years (in German books usually no one uses English words)
  • <br> at least two times
  • some text (without specification)
  • starting a link with http://

If so it's not possible to save the page. The user gets a message "no spam allowed". I'll see if this filter has positive effect. Perhaps other WMF projects can do the same. -- Juetho (talk) 16:36, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Additional information:
  • This filter works. The spammer is not able to store this page provided that one of the English words is contained in the text.
  • If storing the page is refused, the spammer tries again some days later. For instance, "MarleneFi" tried at 16:38, 22. Mai 2013 (CEST) the first time and at 16:04, 25. Mai 2013 (CEST) the second time. In each case there were two trials to store. -- Juetho (talk) 15:14, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Juetho, MF-Warburg has listed (some of) the filters at User:Mathonius/Reports/Ntsamr. Mathonius (talk) 23:49, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

No, not exactly. The Dutch word "feit" is pronounced as /fɛit/, and the English word "fight" is pronounced as /faɪt/. You might like to ask for more information at Wiktionary's information desk. Good luck, Mathonius (talk) 02:29, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure. I personally think they can be deleted, but perhaps it's wise to use the RfD process for those. I'll delete the templates, or do you wish to copy more of them to the Incubator? Mathonius (talk) 21:03, 13 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
I've been copying them to the incubator, but I'm not sure they'll be of any use even if someone wants to revive this project. πr2 (t • c) 21:16, 13 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

New Namespaces

Hi Mathonius, I am from the Hungarian Wiktionary. Would you be able to help create two new namespaces there? Appendix (in Hungarian Függelék) and Index. I am not an admin and the only active admin does not know how to create namespaces. If you are not the right person, please let me know who can assist Small Wikis in technical questions. Thank you. --Panda10 (talk) 14:10, 20 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Panda10, administrators can't create new namespaces. You'll need to file a request at Bugzilla. For example, someone from the Icelandic Wikisource recently filed a similar request for new namespaces for their wiki, see bugzilla:44164. I would advise to propose the new namespaces at hu:wikt:Wikiszótár:Társalgó (or another place for central discussion), wait for a couple of weeks, and then file a request at Bugzilla, referring to the discussion at the Hungarian Wiktionary. Please let me know if you have any questions! Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 16:22, 20 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. This was very helpful. --Panda10 (talk) 17:54, 20 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Chat about Bot Policy and Bots on Danish WP, Commons, Meta

Hello. My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am an en.wikipedian and have spent the last two years researching bots on WP/WM projects (primarily en.wikipedia). I'm wondering if you might be available to chat with me (IRC or IM, Skype, Gchat, phone...whatever works best for you) about your experiences and knowledge of the Bot Policy and the bot community on Dutch WP, Commons, and Meta. I'd greatly appreciate your time and expertise, as it looks like you are highly involved in these bot communities.

You can learn more about me and download my dissertation here, and please let me know if you have any questions. Feel free to leave a response here, on my en.wp Talk page, or email me here if you have some time to chat, and thank you in advance for your consideration.

This research has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards at both the University of Oregon and Endicott College. (Feel free to request a copy of those protocols).

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your consideration. UOJComm (talk) 13:28, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Randall, I don't know a lot about bots, but I'd be happy to help you, or perhaps refer you to people who might know the answers to your questions. I think I have some time to chat on Monday night (that's 17:00 UTC till 21:00 UTC for me). Anyway, I'll be in the IRC channels #wikipedia-nl and #wikimedia-stewards. Do you think you can chat then? Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 22:40, 14 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello. Great, thank you for your willingness to chat. If you think it would be better for me to chat with someone else in the bot community, please do refer me to them (or let me know their usernames and I'll contact them). I am free to chat on Monday so I will look for you on IRC (unless you'd like to set a particular time?). Thanks again. UOJComm (talk) 15:36, 16 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello again Mathonius. I'm sorry I missed you on IRC today...another interview ran long, and now I have to head out to pick up my wife. Perhaps we can reschedule for another time this week that you will be on IRC anyway (or I can just say hello if I see you). Again, my apologies. UOJComm (talk) 21:22, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
No problem, Randall. I think it's easier if you say hello when you see me. I expect to be pretty busy later this week, so I'm not sure when I can chat. I might drop by on IRC this evening though. Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 16:49, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

R u reporting this?

Hi, Mathonius.

Are you reporting this kind of spam? I have seen them these days. They add this slash (|) as a content and some nonsense spam in summary. There are other, but as we can't see deleted edits in Luxo's tool, I wouldn't remember in which wiki they edited.—Teles «Talk to me ˱@ L C S˲» 07:48, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Oh, here is another one. Also an open proxy.—Teles «Talk to me ˱@ L C S˲» 07:52, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hey Teles, I remember seeing and tagging one of those on the English Wikisource yesterday (see here). I'm not keeping a list of this spam type as of this moment though. Do you think it might be useful? Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 08:40, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm seeing a fair amount of this crosswiki - some on en.wikibooks and en.wiki this week QuiteUnusual (talk) 08:52, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
There is quite a bit of open proxy spam around (again) at present. They can't even arrange it to spam properly! As to recording it I guess it is a case of "where do you stop". The basic xrumer bot spam has been around years (Drini had a page on it at one point in the past). --Herby talk thyme 09:28, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Plus - a variant which I've not seen here. Maybe they are amending the bot (the link went to a dead page too?). Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:06, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, I remember seeing some Ntsamr spam in the first days with links to deleted blogs etc... Are there other differences too? Mathonius (talk) 12:25, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Check the deleted page but the layout is different generally and the wording is not the same as the usual pattern - new prog/bot/script maybe? --Herby talk thyme 12:49, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Not sure if it worth to report it... but, hey, you are the reporter; you tell me :D
To be honest, I see a reason to log just a few examples of the same spam, so it tends to be better recognizable by others, but I don't see reasons to report each and all of them.—Teles «Talk to me ˱@ L C S˲» 23:59, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay then. I've created User:Mathonius/Reports/Vertical bar spam. Thanks, Mathonius (talk) 00:09, 8 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Please help me to solve this. --Kolega2357 (talk) 18:17, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Map-replacing IP page

I hope you're ok with this - I was looking for the page in the subpages of your "Reports" but it wasn't there! Shock shock. --MF-W 23:43, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Of course! Thanks a lot! I hadn't noticed the inconsistency. Mathonius (talk) 23:49, 17 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Met vriendelijke groet, Mathonius (talk) 04:59, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Met vriendelijke groet, Borvo e.v.a :::--80.201.82.30 11:08, 3 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Weinig success gewenst. --80.201.17.223 09:44, 8 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

What's up? Mathonius (talk) 04:51, 2 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry I didn't see your message since I didn't get a notice and I've been pretty busy the last three days. So I need help with a problem me and another user are having. And thank you so much for responding. (68.33.8.192 20:29, 4 May 2013 (UTC))Reply
Okay. What's the problem? Mathonius (talk) 20:54, 4 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay, This is how the story begins (I'm sorry if it's pretty long, but I wanted you to know how it happened). it all began when I made some edits in the wikis in the other languages (Babelfish) but on the same theme article which was Separation of powers. I made contributions on the english wikipedia and the others being es.wiki and it.wiki. The exception being English and Spanish since I speak both are mother languages but I know a little bit of Italian. I know I repeadetly made the same edit in the it.wikipedia to fix a whole sentence in the article and was blocked by Vituzzu. At that time, Vituzzu was right to block me because I didn't explain my intentions in the talk page of the article and my intentions were repeadetly and had four accounts. A couple months later, I erased a short sentence in the article Repubblica, and the sentence was incorrect and this time I did explain my reasons why in the summary box and talk page, but Vituzzu reverted my edit without giving a reason. Then he sent me a message that he would block me for evading his block and having four accounts. He was right about the for accounts but seemed arrogant to keep the edit I made in the article and blocked me before I would tell him my true reasons for my four accounts. My four accounts is the result of three of them being used in different locations (Home, School and Work fourth one being that someone else knows my password but haven't seen its been used). I know I did an error in creating four accounts and for repeatedly inserting a paragraph but I don't think he said that he would block me for having evaded his block and for not being considerate of other people by not taking part to a collaborative project. I edited the article because it was wrong and since nobody would do anything about it, I felt I should had deleted the incorrect statement. After that, I tried to explain and talk to Vituzzu, but he ignored my messages and before the block, he insulted my Italian and called me a troll. I waited patiently for my block to expire from January to April 26 2013. After the blocked expired, I sent Vituzzu a message to let him know my block expired and that I wanted to talk to him regarding the last article. But he blocked me without reason and without telling me why he did it and never responded to my messages, and that's when I began to think that Vituzzu was beginning to be rude. I didn't know what to do, so I sent messages to ask for help, but no one responded, until you responded my message and that's how the story takes up to this point. I thank yu for your time. (68.33.8.192 00:25, 5 May 2013 (UTC))Reply
So can you help me? (68.33.8.192 16:38, 5 May 2013 (UTC))Reply
I don't know yet. It takes time to read, think and write. Mathonius (talk) 11:35, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

User page

Hello. I wanted to know if I can request you to delete my user page in fa.wiki. Nobody else rather than me has not done any major contribution to it. One of the admins there prevents my user page from deletion due to unjustified reasons incompatible with deletion policy. Thanks.--Sicaspi (talk) 23:33, 4 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Sicaspi, thanks for your message. I'd have to decline your request, because stewards don't have the authority to decide deletion requests on the Persian Wikipedia, especially if that might mean overruling a decision of the local administrators. It's unclear to me what happened exactly, but you may wish to consider using the regular deletion procedure (w:fa:ویکی‌پدیا:نظرخواهی برای حذف), try discussing it elsewhere and/or consider blanking your user page instead as a compromise. Discussing it would mean - in my opinion - contacting the administrator who declined your request and, if that doesn't solve the problem, asking the rest of the community for their opinion(s). You could ask Mardetanha for more advice. He's a fellow steward and he understands the Persian language. Regards, Mathonius (talk) 08:40, 5 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I have discussed that with the admin. He/She refers me to a content conflict we've had some years ago in an article and claims that since I have had some unbeneficial edits in that article, he wants to have records of my user page which is totally irrelevant. This sysop had overruled deletion of my page two times and I asked othersd in the admin noticeboard but nobody has taken action. Mardetanha has not been there for a while. This admin should not be allowed to undelete user pages that can contain personal info with such a wrong and irrelevant justification. -Sicaspi (talk) 17:12, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Mathonius. You have new messages at Mathonius's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Hello, Draubb. I'm very sorry, but I don't have the time or the knowledge to introduce you to Wikiversity. I'd advise you to ask someone at Wikiversity for help instead. I don't like using {{Talkback}}. Please consider putting my talk page on your watchlist. It might be easier to follow your messages if you communicate on the project itself: messages about Wikiversity should probably be placed at Wikiversity, et cetera. Danish Wikisource Filter

Hello Mathonius, can I ask why you made this filer? --Simeondahl (talk) 21:21, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Simeondahl, actually, Frigotoni enabled that filter (see here), and he linked to a page in my user space. Maybe he can answer your question? Mathonius (talk) 22:27, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but why did he enabled it? - We do not have a lot of acitity, and if we setup a lot of filters, then I think it will be lower :( --Simeondahl (talk) 22:39, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Simeondahl, yes, it was me who enabled that filter. It is, in my opinion, a well-improved version of this filter on Wikidata, which was created to prevent a specific kind of spammer from editing. I saw fit to import and enable it on da.wikisource.org as well, since your Wiki seems to be affected by that spammer (on the other hand it has been activated on many small wikis). And looks like as if it's working properly, as you can see here (you can block it now). But if you prefer to delete and block it manually you can, of course, mark the filter as deleted. --Frigotoni ...i'm here; 10:13, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

OTRS

Hoi Mathonius! The preceding unsigned comment was added by Racing Reporter (talk)

Vriendelijke groet, Mathonius (talk) 12:32, 12 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi MF-W, thanks for your message. I think it's best if the regular deletion procedure is followed, just because of the discussion, even though it seems like an obvious deletion candidate to me. The nomination can now be found here. Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 22:40, 20 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of my userpage

Hi Mathonius. I see that you deleted my userpage a few days ago because it was "spam". I don't remember anymore if it was me who created it (and if yes, what was on it) - could you check in the history? If it wasn't me, I'll create a new userpage, otherwise I'd appreciate knowing what I wrote on it that was so bad. Thanks! :) darkweasel94 (talk) 12:25, 24 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Darkweasel94, thanks for your message. No worries! Your userpage was created by 88.190.61.169, which is a French IP address being used by a typical spambot. This type of spambot creates other people's userpages for spam or SEO purposes, which is very annoying and often confusing. I usually add "Spam: user page not created by this user" as the deletion rationale, but I must've forgotten to do that this time. I'm sorry for the confusion. Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 14:08, 24 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ok thanks for clarifying. Nothing to be sorry for on your part, I simply didn't know anymore if I had ever created a Meta userpage. :) darkweasel94 (talk) 14:12, 24 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

English/Dutch translations

Dear Mathonius, I am contacting you to introduce myself. My name is Jessica Robell and I have recently joined the Wikimedia Foundation as a part of the fundraising team. My work will be focused to a large extent around translations. I am very interested in finding engaged Wikipedians, such as yourself, who would be interested in contributing with their time to translate shorter messages from English to Dutch. We have for example recently put up a 'Thank you letter' from the Wikimedia Foundation's ED Sue Gardner for translation, using the translation extension. You can find the letter here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=page-Fundraising%2FTranslation%2FThank+you+email+20131202&action=proofread&filter=translated&language=nl I would be most grateful to get your help to translate/proofread this letter in order to develop a quality translation in Dutch.

Furthermore, in addition to using the translation extension, my aim is to develop a few personal contacts to whom I can reach out with potential questions regarding a particular word choice etc. As an engaged Wikipedian, I would be very interested in hearing your view on this.

Thank you very much for your support. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Jessica Robell Global Fundraising Coordinator Wikimedia Foundation Jrobell (talk) 09:22, 31 December 2013 (UTC)jrobellReply
