Name
[eedit | eedit soorce]The name Castano maist probably derives frae the auld "Silvae Castanae" (chestnut firths). Ither sources suggest the oreeginal name wis in fact "Castro Casteno", as toun wis close tae a castle or ither fortification. Those sources point tae a ancient crest or shield o the toun that depicts a red castle frae which grows a leafy chestnut tree, still shown the day on the stem o the current cooncil. The suffix "Primo" wis addit bi the then Keeng o Italy, Victor Emmanuel II o Italy, bi a decree datit 10 Dizember 1863 tae distinguish Castano frae anither toun o the same name in the Province o Pavia.
