From Средњи Енглески animal, from Стари Француски animal, from Латински animal, a nominal use of an adjective from animale, neuter of animālis, from anima (breath, spirit). Displaced native Middle English deor, der (animal) (from Стари Енглески dēor (animal)), Средњи Енглески reother (animal, neat) (from Стари Енглески hrīþer, hrȳþer (neat, ox)).
