The seeds of the Combiner Wars were planted in the era of the Thirteen Primes. With his Enigma of Combination, Nexus Prime created the Headmasters, fusions of his own bipedal followers and the smaller of Onyx Prime's Maximals. This was seen by many as the ultimate exemplification of Cybertronian power, with the secrets of combiners being highly coveted. When the First Cybertronian Civil War came to a close, Nova Prime sought to restart Prima's colonization plan with the expansion, a galaxy spanning Cybertronian empire which he would build through the power of more combiners. As his scientists worked to uncover the secrets of the lost art, none but Galvatron knew that the Enigma was in fact a tangible, mystical artifact. Having slain all the Headmasters, Galvatron had concealed the Enigma, unable to destroy it, and eventually shot it off-world, hoping it would burn up in a distant star. Nonetheless, the mad science of Jhiaxus produced one combiner, Monstructor, who was brought down by Omega Supreme. Primus: All Good Things The Crucible

In 2015, the Enigma of Combination was located on Earth and brought to Starscream. As part of a plan to present himself as the saviour of Caminus, Starscream used the Enigma to stabilize and enhance the volatile Menasor before setting the Decepticons loose on the unsuspecting colony. First Contact Later using the Enigma to repair and enhance Superion so he could defeat Menasor. The Sum and Its Parts

While Cybertron and Caminus had promising initial successes in negotiations (mainly due to the Camiens worshipping Optimus Prime), Prowl had serious reservations about letting Starscream turn the colonies into the stepping stone for a new empire, having Rattrap space bridge him to Cybertron so he could deal with the situation. The Possible Light Much to Rattrap's contention, Prowl intended to deal with this by having Devastator destroy the space bridge network. When Superion tried to bring down the rogue combiner, he found himself outmatched by the brute's sheer strength. Starscream used the Enigma to quickly repair the damaged Aerialbots and draft the nearby Protectobots (and some passing bloke) into Defensor, the two Autobot combiners bringing down the rogue. In the light of so many combiners attacks, Starscream graciously lent one to Caminus, for security's sake of course. Mistakes and Mayhem

Keenly aware that Superion and Defensor were loyal to Optimus Prime and not him, Starscream used the Enigma to incorporate Scoop into Devastator, granting him the combiner's loyalty. Rattrap took advantage of this to stage a prison break, Swindle and Menasor leading the Decepticons back to the space bridge, and stole the Enigma, bringing it to the imprisoned Prowl. At the space bridge, the four combiners grappled, falling through and landing on an alien planet. It was here that a fifth combiner, formed from Optimus Prime's inner retinue, Optimus Maximus arrived to end the fighting. You, Me, and the Universe After Optimus Maximus had centered himself, the fighting carried the combiners across the galaxy, portions of their brawl taking place on each colony world inhabited by Cybertronians before they wound up back in the space bridge chamber, knocking out the Decepticon combiners. As Prowl was still a wanted criminal however, Optimus Maximus was forced to decombine so he could be taken into custody. Windblade would despairingly note, however, that the conflict had ended with all functional combiners under Starscream's control. On the colonies themselves, the inhabitants had felt the touch of their ancestral homeworld and prepared for the eventual contact. All That Remains

On the spaceborne colony of Carcer, Elita One viewed the combiners as proof of Cybertron being a conquering empire. The Will of the Few Arcee viewed the conflict as proof that the Enigma itself should be destroyed before Windblade convinced her that, as she hated having decisions forced onto others, she had no right to unilaterally decide for others. The brief skirmish resulted in the birth of Victorion, a skirmish everyone agreed to keep secret. An Uneventful Night
