Wikidata training 2015

Background

In August 2015 a volunteer got in touch to ask about Wikidata training. There had been a previous session in the second half of 2014 that was popular and there will be many volunteers who weren't able to attend. If there is enough interest then a second session in the same vein can easily be arranged at Wikimedia UK's office. Charles Matthews has kindly offered to lead a session and hopefully other volunteers can be encouraged to deliver something, too.

If you are interested in attending please do add your name to the list below. If you are interested in delivering a session, talk or workshop of any kind, please do add your name to the second list and outline what you would like to do.

When enough people are interested (eight or so?) we can begin looking at dates and other logistical details.

Possible programme - what would you like to cover?

My initial idea is to assume only familiarity with Wikipedia editing, and give a fairly gentle introduction to basic entry work on Wikidata, as the first session.

After that it is natural to look at two directions: semi-automated work (i.e. use of tools) which makes it easy to cover ground more quickly; and the various front ends that already exist to display Wikidata content. Possible areas of interest might include how Wikidata may be used in the English Wikipedia, including a review of the community's attitudes to the use of Wikidata, its advantages and pitfalls. Another item could be how we might make use of Wikidata in the Welsh Wikipedia to help create articles by supplying a framework (infobox) for the article to be expanded. Such a project could be an excellent controlled case study for using Wikidata to improve other small Wikipedias. --RexxS (talk) 21:07, 3 August 2015 (BST)

Logistics

The Wikimedia UK office will be made available for this. Also, if a volunteer can find another free space elsewhere and there is enough interest, another session can be held.

A start time of 1pm on a Saturday would be ideal as there are some volunteers who would have difficulty making an earlier start. 1-6pm looks most likely. If anyone would like to propose dates, please do go ahead. Currently, Saturday 5 September is unavailable due to a clash with the Wikipedia Science Conference.
