The Stephen King TV adaptations of the 90s have their legion of fans despite the varying qualities. The most famous mini-series of the bunch is the 1990 adaptation of It with Tim Curry in one of his many cultural defining roles as Pennywise. Many other adaptations include Storm of the Century and The Langoliers. One of the adaptations that has a cult following is the TV adaptation of The Stand from 1994. Blu-ray.com has recently reported that Paramount Home Media Distribution will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Mick Garris’ The Stand with a Limited SteelBook edition of the film, which is set to be sold exclusively at Walmart on September 24.
The description reads,

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

In 2021, Juneteenth, the celebration of the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans, was established as a federal holiday, and with new holidays to celebrate, there are new opportunities for holiday movies, of course. From director Dawn Wilkinson (“A Nashville Christmas Carol”) and writers Matt Allen (“Mighty Oak”), Lisa Mathis and Krista Suh, comes “Block Party,” a summer family comedy that’s ostensibly themed around Juneteenth.
The connection to Juneteenth feels tenuous at best, as characters continually name-check the holiday but never stop to explain or discuss the meaning of the celebration. The script assumes that the audience is familiar with the holiday and its importance, which is perhaps a heartening sign that Juneteenth doesn’t need to be explained anymore, but most great holiday films at least touch on the significant themes of the holiday (e.g. “the true meaning of Christmas”).
“Block Party” feels strangely divorced from what Juneteenth actually signifies,...

For fans of The Stand there are certain characters and events that stand out. In episode 6 we finally get to see not only one of the favourite characters from the book finally make his appearance, but also the build up begin to the actual Stand.
Harold (Owen Teague) and Nadine (Amber Heard) put their plan into effect as a vigil is held for Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg) who is still missing. In New Vegas Trashcan Man (Ezra Miller) arrives as Tom (Brad William Henke) makes his escape.
Trashcan Man is one of the most important characters in The Stand after Mother Abigail and Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard), so it’s nice to see him finally make an appearance. With a talented actor like Ezra Miller taking the role there was high expectations for the character.

This article contains spoilers for episode 5 of The Stand.
In “Fear and Loathing in New Vegas,” the fifth entry in CBS All Access’ nine-part adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, we get to spend a significant amount of time in Las Vegas, where the demonic Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) has established his sinister kingdom.
There are other important plot developments in the course of the episode, such as the aftermath of Teddy Weizak’s (Eion Bailey) murder at the hands of Harold (Owen Teague) and Nadine (Amber Heard) — which they made to look like a suicide — as they construct their destructive plans; Frannie’s (Odessa Young) growing suspicions about Harold and her own plan to do something about it; and the abrupt departure of Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg) as she seeks guidance from God.

Now that we are reaching the mid-point of The Stand with it’s fourth episode, the focus should be moving onto how people fight against the Flagg. This is exactly what we get, but the problems with the show are starting to become obvious.
With questions beginning to be asked in the Boulder Free Zone, leadership is called for. Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) uses Nadine (Amber Heard) to influence Harold (Owen Teague), and spies are sent out into the west to find out more about what the Dark Man has planned.
What is starting to trouble me about The Stand in this new format is that the show is meant to be about an America where 99.9% have succumbed to Captain Trips and the world should feel empty. There is a distinct lack of...

Now onto the third episode of The Stand, it is obvious that things have to start happening. With so many characters still to be discovered though, it’s almost expected we’ll be seeing plenty of flashbacks. Now that we are used to mixing the past with current events, is The Stand keeping things interesting?

Katherine McNamara appears as Julie Lawry in one single scene during The Stand‘s fourth episode, and she makes quite an impression — though not necessarily a good one.
Julie arrives near the end of Thursday’s installment, appearing in a flashback to Nick Andros’ (Henry Zaga) and Tom Cullen’s (Brad William Henke) journey to Hemingford Home in Colorado. While resting and picking up supplies in an abandoned warehouse, the men encounter Julie, who’s donning a party dress and jewelry… and aiming her shotgun right at Nick. (Her first words: “You dangerous?”)

This article contains spoilers for episode 3 of The Stand.
After spending much of episodes 1 and 2 with important characters such as Stu Redman (James Marsden), Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young), Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) and Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo), the new miniseries version of Stephen King’s The Stand brings in or fills out the backgrounds of several more key personnel in episode 3, titled “Blank Pages.”
This episode of the nine-part CBS All Access limited series introduces the characters of Nick Andros (Brazilian actor Henry Zaga from The New Mutants), Ray Brentner (Irene Bedard) and Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke), all of whom play a major role in King’s tale — and all of whom have received a fairly significant overhaul for the new adaptation.
In King’s book and the 1994 miniseries, Ray is Ralph Brentner, a physically imposing yet good-natured 45-year-old farmer from Oklahoma and a key leader of the Boulder Free Zone.

Stephen King is a problematic author. One of the most prolific writers around, King’s tomes have been the source of discussion for everything, from his employment of the magical Negro trope to his repetitious use of women fearing their menstrual cycle. Running alongside that is his usage of the disabled as objects of both fear and pity. CBS All Access’ recent adaptation of “The Stand,” streaming now, should remind us that King — and the directors adapting his work — has an ableism problem. (IndieWire has reached out to CBS All Access and King for comment.)
“The Stand” tells the story of a devastating pandemic and the group of survivors trying to restore society. On one side are the acolytes of Mother Abigail (played by Whoopi Goldberg in the new series), while the venal hedonism of the world is overseen by the “dark man,” Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard).

As someone whose favorite work from Stephen King is The Stand, to say that I’ve been excited about CBS All Access’ new series based on the epic book would be a huge understatement. What’s interesting to me is that, while this is a story that’s inherently about good versus evil, it’s always been more than that to me. Personally, I feel like what has always made The Stand so riveting every time I revisit it is that it’s a story about the commonality of the human existence, and how stripping us down to the point where all that’s left is just our humanity is an act that can bring out the best—and in some instances, the worst—in all of us. I’m not someone who would consider themselves a religious person, and despite the fact that the world can be an ugly place,...

Stephen King has long had his issues with ending his books, which is the downside of writing without outlines and letting the story travel wherever makes sense in the moment. Beginnings, though? Few writers have ever been stronger at them, and few King novels begin better than his 1978 post-apocalyptic opus The Stand.
The novel opens with a soldier escaping a top-secret military facility as a plague has been unleashed that kills everyone around him. He grabs his wife and daughter, and takes off into the night, unwittingly spreading this superflu...

In terms of post-apocalyptic shows about a viral communicable disease causing the end of the world, CBS All Access’ “The Stand” falls somewhere between Amazon’s “Utopia” and AMC’s still-kicking “The Walking Dead” franchise. Classier than the former, which gleefully used violence as a narrative shortcut, but somehow more glacially paced than the latter, “The Stand” arrives at a coincidental time given how we live now. But this adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most dense, sprawling works never quite reaches the epic scope illustrated so clearly in the 1978 novel.
Instead, showriunner Benjamin Cavell have applied a strangely sanitized sheen to the central threat of elemental evil, resulting in a miniseries that feels simultaneously over-detailed and underdeveloped. That conflicted quality makes the danger faced by the community serving as humanity’s last stand curiously subdued, and “The Stand” struggles to distinguish itself outside of its exceptional casting choices.

A limited series about a deadly virus that decimates the majority of the population may not seem like purely escapist entertainment during a year when a very real pandemic ravaged the globe, forcing production and other businesses to shut down and pushing events, such as Mipcom, online only.
Yet, it is the very combination of timely premise, immersive world and rich characters that make Benjamin Cavell’s nine-part adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” wholly relevant.
“What better moment for a show that imagines that civilization torn down to the studs, forcing our characters to confront questions about the very foundations of government, what society owes the individual and vice versa, what we all as humans owe to one another [and] what we’re willing to sacrifice in terms of personal liberty in order to feel safe and protected?” says Cavell.

The official trailer for the CBS All access adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand is here!
We can't have in-person Comic Cons, but we can still have nice things.
And on December 17, we'll get to see why Randall Flagg was such a good manipulator.
Ok. I'm going to say it. A hot Randall Flagg makes a lot of sense.
When reading the book, I always imagined Flagg as hideous and scarred. I can't remember the true description, but that was my takeaway.
But it makes a lot more sense for the evil bastard to be the personification of Alexander Skarsgård because it would be easier for a good looking man, no matter how evil, to get attention before revealing his true colors to his followers.

The first teaser for CBS’s new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand has arrived. The 30-second teaser is a very small slice of footage but there are two pretty big reveals in it: our first looks at Whoopi Goldberg’s post-apocalyptic prophet Mother Abagail and Alexander Skarsgard’s Randall Flag, the Walking Dude himself.
Check out the teaser below:
The Stand, which is considered by many Constant Readers to be King’s absolute masterpiece, is the story of two groups of survivors living in a post-apocalyptic United States after a superflu known as Captain Trips has completely decimated 99 percent of the world’s population. In the book, these two groups — one representing the light led by the faithful Mother Abagail, and the other the darkness within all men led by the sinister Randall Flagg — find themselves on a collision course that will decide the fate of what’s left of humanity.

CBS All Access has released the first teaser for its upcoming adaptation of “The Stand.”
The short teaser, clocking in at just 30 seconds, aired during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. It briefly shows Whoopi Goldberg as Mother Abagail, introducing herself to Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young) in a cornfield and beckoning her, “you come see me at Hemingfoot Home.” From there, it goes on to display eerie deserted streets, distressing hospital moments and even a little bit of levitation.
“The Stand” is based on Stephen King’s 1978 novel of the same name and follows a battle between good and evil among the survivors of a plague. The main characters in the apocalyptic story are primarily split into two camps: those who follow the 108-year-old Mother Abagail, and those who align with Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

CBS All Access has set a date for its new The Stand limited series. The adaptation of the 1978 Stephen King novel will premiere on Dec. 17, bringing a new vision of the apocalypse to our TV screens just in time for the holidays.
The Stand, which is considered by many Constant Readers to be King’s absolute masterpiece, is the story of two groups of survivors living in a post-apocalyptic United States after a super flu known as Captain Trips has completely decimated 99 percent of the world’s population. In the book, these two groups — one representing the light led by the faithful Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg), and the other the darkness within all men led by the sinister Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) — find themselves on a collision course that will decide the fate of what’s left of humanity.

CBS All Access‘ limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” will premiere Dec. 17, the streamer announced Tuesday.
The series will be a weekly one, with each of the subsequent eight episodes streaming one at a time every Thursday following that premiere. As previously announced, King penned the finale and also wrote a new coda that will take the story beyond where is 800-plus page 1978 tome left things.
“During the two years we spent making ‘The Stand,’ we all felt the responsibility of adapting what may be the most beloved work of one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, but none of us could have imagined that Stephen King’s 40-year-old masterpiece about a global pandemic would come to be so eerily relevant,” said showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “We’re honored to tell this sprawling, epic story, including a new coda that Stephen King has wanted to add for decades.
