Last week, I went along to a fancy hotel in London to sit down with two of the stars of new British indie movie, Elfie Hopkins. It stars Ray Winstone, Kimberley Nixon, Steven Mackintosh, Rupert Evans, Jaime Winstone, Kate Magowan and is directed by new up and coming director, Ryan Andrews.
The two people in question are Jamie Winstone and Aneurin Barnard who tell me about how their characters journey through the movie, what their experiences of adventure were growing up and how there was the possibility that the movie was going to be shot in 3d.
Elfie Hopkins is released in UK cinemas today, 20th April.

The humdrum life of an aspiring teenage detective takes an interesting turn when a new family move into the quiet neighburhood and before long Elfie Hopkins is convinced there is more to their new neighbours than meets the eye.
If you missed the recent trailer for Ryan Andrews’ feature debut it’s well worth taking a look, if only to enjoy the strange tone evoked. It put me in mind of Jeunet & Caro’s Delicatessen shot through with a Nancy Drew vibe by way of The Wicker Man. And if that fever dream of a sackful of influences isn’t enough to get you interested then, gosh Jed, I don’t even want to know you.*
Jaime Winstone leads the film and is joined by her Dad Ray, recently seen troubling capital scum in The Sweeney trailer, and Kimberley Nixon, Rupert Evans, Kate Magowan and Steven Mackintosh join them in the mix.

Ray and Jamie Winstone are leading us through a very dark fairy tale if the new trailer for Elfie Hopkins is to be believed.
Father and daughter Winstone are joined by Kimberley Nixon, Rupert Evans, Kate Magowan and Steven Mackintosh, who always adds something a little interesting into the mix.
The official plot gives nothing away except for the bare bones, to whit:
An aspiring teen detective stumbles into her first real case, when investigating the mysterious new family in her neighborhood.
So far, so Nancy Drew. However what I liked about this trailer is that it could just as easily be showcasing a family friendly, if a touch dark, comedy with some beautiful, almost ethereal shots of forestland before the tone starts to shift like a dream slipping into a nightmare. Very nicely done too. Kudos trailermakers.

It’s a tough climate lately for independent British cinema. With funding cut to the UK Film Council (one of the primary bodies for film investment in the UK) these past few years have been a rather bleak period for moving image this side of the pond. As a worker in the industry myself, I always rejoice a little when something British comes along with a budget, however paltry, and I actually followed Screwed as it was being produced. It certainly has potential; based on the best-selling British novel by Ronnie Thompson it was directed by current British hotshot Reg Traviss (helmer of Joy Division) and contains a whole host of British faces that you’ll likely have seen repeatedly on the British terrestrial channels.
Screwed tells the semi-autobiographical story of novel author Ronnie Thompson and his experiences while working in some of the UK’s worst prisons.

Partially based on ex-prison officer Ronnie Thompson’s novel of the same name, Screwed centers on Sam Norwood (James D’Arcy), a former frontline soldier who finds himself working as a prison officer in one of Britain’s most deplorable institutions. As the harsh realities of being a prison ‘screw’ take their toll, Sam finds solace in booze, drugs and prostitutes, rejecting his family and slowly embroiling himself into a life he could never have imagined.
Director Reg Traviss and screenwriter Colin Butts try hard to inject verve and originality into Screwed, most noticeably in the way Traviss eerily presents the drama from the ‘screws’ point of view and in Butts’ deft approach to Sam’s character. While these aspects are refreshing to see and make for a solid setup, the fact both Traviss and Butts revert all too easily back to the clichés and contrivances of a typical prison...

A Lonely Place To Die Directed by: Julian Gilbey Written by: Julian and Will Gilbey Starring: Melissa George, Ed Speleers, Sean Harris, Kate Magowan, Alec Newman, Eamonn Walker Good news for film fans, here’s a festival film scheduled to hit a screen near you in early November. Anytime you have a thriller set in the world of mountain climbing, there’s a certain element of added suspense. The sport is fraught with its own dangers and inherent risks, making it the perfect backdrop for a film about survival. Add a few villains into the mix, and you have a real nail biter on your hands. Face it: there is no way to quickly escape a murderous villain when you are forced to scale the sheer face of a cliff with minimal equipment, so the action is absolutely agonizing to watch. A Lonely Place to Die follows a group of...

Though the British cinema scene is frequently commended for its witty comedies made on low budgets, we tend to struggle in more action-reliant genres such as horrors and thrillers, given the usually higher costs required to give them adequate polish. A Lonely Place to Die, the latest film from Rise of the Footsoldier director Julian Gilbey, does with a $4m budget what countless Hollywood thrillers with a ten-fold budget can’t – generate palpable suspense intertwined with intelligent action and believable characters.
Beginning without too much of a preamble, the film swiftly introduces us to a group of mountain climbers trekking in the Scottish Highlands; enthusiastic but sensible intermediate Alison (Melissa George), level-headed expert Rob (Alec Newman...

Australian actress Melissa George clearly enjoys films with an edgy, sinister atmosphere.
After making her screen debut in Alex Proyas's 1998 sci-fi flick Dark City, she went on to appear in such releases as The Amityville Horror, Turistas, Derailed, 30 Days of Night, The Betrayed and, most recently, the temporally-tormented Triangle in 2009.
Her next role sees her on the edge quite literally in the mountaineering thriller A Lonely Place To Die, directed by Julian Gilbey (Rise of the Footsoldier).
It has its European premiere in London on August 29 as the closing feature of Film4's horror festival Frightfest, and will then be released in cinemas on September 9.
Joining Melissa George in the cast are Ed Speleers (Eragon), Eamonn Walker (Unbreakable), Karel Roden (RocknRolla), Sean Harris (Harry Brown), and Kate Magowan (Stardust).

It's been a long wait, but Elfie Hopkins and the Gammons is finally shooting in Wales.
The independent horror feature film stars Jaime Winstone as a grungy wannabe detective who attempts to uncover the human flesh-eating truth about the close-knit Gammon family.
The film is directed and co-written by Ryan Andrews who told Shock Till You Drop
"After meeting Jaime I knew she could become the main focus [for] something really special and unique in British horror fantasy terms. Elfie is a finely tuned representation of my own childhood memories growing up in rural Wales. I often used to imagine myself as a vampire hunter let loose on a community of surreal country folk. Riyad and I have taken those already magnified experiences and transformed them further into a combination of British twee and American grunge – a weird mash-up of two worlds with a heightened reality comic-strip feel informed by everything...
