This weekend, Jesse Eisenberg returns to the big screen in A Real Pain. The film, which he wrote, directs, and stars in, follows a man struggling to keep his emotions on check during a trip with his cousin. A Real Pain has drawn considerable praise for Eisenberg’s subdued directing, brilliant writing, and Kiernan Culkin’s livewire performance. It bodes well for Eisenberg, who has been one of indie films darling performers for years. To celebrate his latest career milestone, we’re highlighting seven of his best performances to date.
The Squid and the Whale (2005)
As a young actor, Jesse Eisenberg landed on many radars for his emotional performance in The Squid and the Whale. Told from the perspective of two children struggling with their parent’s divorce, Noah Baumbach gave Eisenberg a role that required incredible pathos. They may have brought the Apple TV+ original series to life—along with showrunner Bill Lawrence—but Jason Segel, who plays Jimmy, a therapist grieving the death of his wife on Shrinking, wasn’t hanging out with Brett Goldstein on set. Segel didn’t want to look at the Ted Lasso alum because of their characters’ “painful” past.
Goldstein plays the drunk driver behind Tia’s death in ‘Shrinking’ Season 2
Shrinking Season 1 kept the identity of the drunk driver involved in the fatal crash that killed Jimmy’s wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden), a mystery. All that changed in season 2 when flashbacks finally revealed Goldstein as Louis, or “Double D” (drunk driver).
Jimmy thought back to the night that turned his and daughter Alice’s (Lukita Maxwell) lives upside down. Initially, viewers saw a person’s outline as they were put in the back of a police car at the site of the accident.

Amanda Seyfried has found the ultimate work-life balance.
While the actress traded in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood years ago for New York City, even that proved to be too much still, leading her to eventually put down roots on a farm in Upstate New York. And now with a husband and two children, she wouldn’t change a thing.
“I moved upstate long before I had a family. Staying here was the best decision for privacy, peace and nature. It offers a more balanced life than the city does,” Seyfried recently told Forbes, adding that it is “essential for my mental health.”
While the Mama Mia star still loves her career and acting, she said having this “peaceful place to call home” allows her to better “acclimate to the faster lifestyle of the city, the high-energy of press events and life on-set.”

Bill Lawrence and Jason Segel unpacked their reasons for empowering “Shrinking” writers to guest star in the series, highlighting that it’s important to provide opportunities for growth in Hollywood, and that it simply just helps the show be better and funnier.

“I don’t make decisions about the writers doing guest spots. They earn those all on their own,” Segel went on. “But I really do feel like if you have the opportunity to give someone breaks, give people breaks left and right.”

Did Jason Segel almost quit How I Met Your Mother? (Photo Credit – Facebook)

In the streaming landscape, it’s been virtually impossible to get an apples-to-apples read on the relative popularity of TV shows and movies.
Netflix, of course, releases its own rankings based on total views, while Nielsen’s measures viewership in the U.S. across multiple streamers. But because of Netflix’s sheer size — it counted more than 282 million subscribers as of the end of Q3 — it tends to dominate the viewership figures tallied by Nielsen.
So what if streaming viewership were weighted based on the size of each platform? That’s the idea behind a new ranking developed by consulting company Owl & Co. For the month of October (Sept. 27-Oct. 24), the firm ranked original series based on Luminate’s Streaming Viewership data, which covers original and library shows and movies in the U.S. and is based on a panel of 2.5 million homes. (Disclosure: Variety and Luminate are both owned by Pmc.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Shrinking” Season 2, Episode 4.
“Shrinking” star Luke Tennie says the explosively physical scene in Episode 4between Jimmy (Jason Segel) and Sean (Tennie) was a moment production and ultimately viewers knew would happen sooner than later, adding that he conjured up the momentum in that scene from a casting note he received when he first auditioned for the role.
“It’s a moment we knew was coming because we hadn’t really seen it,” Tennie told TheWrap in an interview. “We saw Sean snap in Episode 1, Season 1, to protect somebody. We never really saw Sean just lose it without a real understanding of what the catalyst was. So it was exciting, but most of the prep came from really just digging into the birth of Sean for me.”

Wendie Malick is one of TV’s most consistent stars. Her decades of work include shows like Frasier, Hot in Cleveland, Just Shoot Me, Young Sheldon, and more, and she’s worked with her fair share of fellow TV legends like Betty White. Harrison Ford remains one of our biggest movie stars, and Shrinking marked his first foray into television. Now, these two industry veterans play love interests on Shrinking, a show that deftly handles multigenerational stories. And their onscreen romance is a rare narrative treat that Malick tells TV Insider is a “gift” to portray. The Apple TV+ comedy, currently in its second season, stars Jason Segel as a grieving therapist, Jimmy, who resorts to bold methods with his patients as he tries to keep himself out of a deep depression caused by the tragic death of his wife. All of the characters are part of Jimmy and daughter...

There are 208 episodes of the mystery box-lite CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," so from a sheer mathematical standpoint, they can't all be winners. The long, meandering story of Ted Mosby's (Josh Radnor) quest for love — during which he's flanked by best friends Lily Aldrin (Alison Hannigan), Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel), Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), and Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) — spans nine seasons and many, many years in Ted's life, all of which is narrated in retrospect by an older Ted (the voice of Bob Saget), and not every moment is particularly great.
Alongside all-star episodes of "How I Met Your Mother" like "Slap Bet" (where we find about Robin's past as a Canadian teen pop star), "How I Met Everyone Else" (which presents increasingly silly origin stories of Ted's friendships), "Swarley" (where Barney gets a whole new name), and "Spoiler Alert" (where the gang comes face to...

Judd Apatow has delivered some of the most commercially successful comedy movies, launching the careers of several popular actors. However, Apatow’s attempt to produce a television comedy in the late 1990s resulted in Freaks and Geeks, a cult classic sitcom that initially failed to find an audience and was canceled too soon.

Apatow produced the short-lived series Freaks and Geeks which ran for just one season. Over the years, the series has gained a cult following, raising questions over a possible return with a second season. During an interview, Apatow firmly rejected the possibility of reviving the series after almost two decades, and here is why.

I’m not saying Apple TV+ has an issue with repetitive storytelling, but the new drama Before is the service’s third series featuring a renowned comic actor playing a man mourning his dead wife. Not the streaming platform’s third series ever to rely on that hoary trope. Not even their third series this year to draw from that particular well.
Before, with Billy Crystal grieving a dead spouse, follows Disclaimer, with Kevin Kline grieving a dead spouse, and the second season of Shrinking, with Jason Segel still grieving a dead spouse. That’s three shows with this core conceit to premiere since… October 11.
Unfortunately, Big Widower Energy is far from the only way that Before feels like Apple TV+’s most Apple TV+ piece of programming to date. You could show me any glum, washed-out frame from Before and, even without knowing who was in it or what show it was from,...

Imagine this: you’re Kristen Bell, working alongside Jason Segel in a $105M rom-com, and things are going smoothly until Segel has a crazy idea for a hilarious breakup scene. But here’s the kicker—he’s completely n*ked. Yep, in true Segel fashion, he took the comedy to an entirely new level, transforming what should’ve been a serious, emotional moment into an awkward yet unforgettable scene.

This not-so-typical rom-com breakup became the buzz of the movie, leaving Bell in a tricky spot and audiences laughing and cringing in equal measure. Segel’s quirky twist added a whole new layer to the film, making it an iconic and awkward cinematic moment that fans still talk about today.

Having successfully smuggled a weekly dose of therapy into three seasons of football sitcom Ted Lasso, Apple cut out the middle man with the first season of Shrinking. Aiming for that same _Lasso_ian sweet spot between puerility and poignance, the show introduced us to psychotherapist Jimmy Laird (Segel). Still grieving the loss of his wife, Jimmy decides to go rogue with his patients, telling them what he really thinks — much to the chagrin of colleagues Gaby (Jessica Williams) and Paul (Harrison Ford).
In many ways, Shrinking’s first outing replicated the experience of therapy-going pretty accurately — if not so much in content, then certainly at least in form. The early throes were a little tense, a little quick to overcompensate for trauma-dumping with uneasy humour, and a little slow to really open up and begin letting moments of sincerity and vulnerability pierce its sardonic armour.

You could pretty much call any adult who sings with puppets to be strange, but Jason Segel has run with it, once being called “weird” and making a career of it. And judging by Forgetting Sarah Marshall, he’s more man than muppet…
Appearing on Today (with Entertainment Weekly), Jason Segel remembered his time working with Judd Apatow initially on Freaks and Geeks, in which he played Rush-loving drummer Andopolis. It was here that Segel – like so many – was taken in by Apatow, who provided the budding actor with advice that would change his course. “It was a bit of an apprenticeship period, where we literally learned how to write a script. And his parting words to me were, ‘Listen, Jace, you’re a weird dude. The only way you’re going to make it is if you write your own material.’ He was right, and it changed my life.

We're heading twenty thousand leagues under the sea, behind the scenes of a superhero blockbuster, and returning to the therapist's sofa in a jam-packed episode of the Pilot TV Podcast this week. First up, on the guesting front, Captain Nemo himself, Shazad Latif, joins us this week to chat Nautilus on Prime Video with our very own journalistic old sea dog James Dyer [26:53 — 43:02 approx]. Later, The Office Australia star Felicity Ward also stops by to chat dance moves, the pressure of being the next David Brent/Michael Scott, and the smell of breaking waters with the Gareth of our office, Jordan King [1:02:33 — 1:20:04 approx].
Back in the pod booth, the pod squad discuss what they've been watching this week (mostly Rivals and The Devil's Hour S2); tackle a tricky listener's question on chameleonic actors; and get stuck into a pretty surprisingly light week for TV news, which included Slow Horses' Season 6 renewal and...

Jason Segal and Harrison Ford will be back for a third series of Bill Lawrence’s Apple TV comedy, Shrinking.
If you haven’t been watching Shrinking on Apple TV+, I would urge you to give it a go. It’s a beautifully-written, warm-hearted comedy that gives Harrison Ford the opportunity to show off comedic skills so good it’s a shame he wasn’t being cast in sitcoms all through his career.
Shrinking is the latest show from Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence. He co-created the show with Jason Segel and Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein.
In it, Segel stars as therapist Jimmy, who’s struggling following the loss of his wife. He begins to take liberties with his work, telling patients exactly what he thinks. Harrison Ford, showing a brilliant flair for deadpan comic delivery, plays his hardnosed boss Paul, Jessica Williams is his colleague Gaby and Christa Miller is his neighbour,...

Many have come to know actor Jason Segel for his childish humor on shows like “How I Met Your Mother” and in films like “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” but with his Apple TV+ series “Shrinking,” Segel aims to expand people’s perception of him. Speaking in a recent interview on “Today” with Hoda Kotb, Segel shared how he values getting to take on more serious and nuanced subject matter with “Shrinking,” especially in relation to his early days in show business.
“I appreciate being 44 years-old all of a sudden,” Segel said. “When I made ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall,’ for example, the rawest form of vulnerability I could think of was full frontal nudity. That’s a 25-year-old guy. And this is, I think, a more sophisticated version of vulnerability that you only achieve from life stuff. You know, saying I’m scared or realizing you let your daughter down and trying to earn back that trust,...

The Duplass Brothers-produced series Somebody Somewhere has long been championed by critics and fans but didn’t receive any accolades on a major scale until it won a Peabody Award for its wonderful second season. This recognition will hopefully bring the show to a broader audience in time for its third and final season to warm and crush their hearts, as it is an incredible work of slice-of-life dramedy that somehow tops the already incredible first two seasons.
Somebody Somewhere Season 3 Review
This season follows the small-town Kansans we’ve come to know — Sam, Joel, and all their friends and loved ones — as they grow apart, each experiencing their own struggles. Although splitting up the cast of an ensemble-driven show like Somebody Somewhere is often a mistake, this approach feels incredibly and unexpectedly natural here because it is rooted in a thematic need rather than a narrative one.

The hit Apple TV+ series “Shrinking” features an unlikely pairing between actors Jason Segel and Harrison Ford. Despite their 38-year age difference, Segel and Ford have developed strong on-screen chemistry playing opposing therapist roles on the show.
Segel plays Jimmy Laird, a grieving therapist who uses unconventional treatment methods. Ford portrays Dr. Paul Rhoades, a veteran therapist handling Parkinson’s disease. In a recent interview, Segel said working alongside Ford validated his career path. “If you have doubts and then find yourself acting opposite Harrison Ford, it’s impossible not to feel you’re right where you should be,” Segel remarked.
The stars’ collaboration almost didn’t happen. Producers feared Ford, known for action roles, wouldn’t take a comedic part. They suggested he watch “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” one of Segel’s comedy films. The 2008 movie includes a notable nude scene featuring Segel’s character.

Jason Segel shared some heartwarming sentiments about what it’s like to share the screen with vet Harrison Ford.
In a preview clip of Sunday Today with Willie Geist, the Shrinking actor said his costar on the Apple TV+ dramedy — about a grieving therapist who throws the rulebook out the window in favor of extreme candidness — helps calm his anxious tendencies about whether he’s putting forth his best work as a performer.

Shrinking’s Jimmy and Gaby have been enjoying the spoils of a mutually beneficial friendship-with-benefits, but in Episode 2, their special arrangement topples in the messiest of ways.
Throughout Season 2’s first two episodes, Gaby knows she’s got to hit-it-and-quit-it. Not only is she starting to catch feelings for Jimmy, but something as small as a scrunchie reminds her of a harsh truth: That she’s sleeping with her late friend’s widower. Even Liz is working overtime to keep these two apart for fear that it’ll explode their friend group. (“I’ve tried everything except knocking his d–k out of your mouth!

When one door closes, a new one opens, at least that’s the case on Apple TV+ these days. A mere week after saying goodbye to the most recent seasons of critically acclaimed series “Slow Horses,” “Bad Monkey,” and “Pachinko,” the streaming service is welcoming the return of its Emmy-nominated comedy “Shrinking.”
In Season 2, the unique comedy about a recently widowed therapist (co-creator and Emmy nominee Jason Segel) who abandons traditional methods in favor of being brutally honest with his patients thoughtfully expands upon its foundation. The new season — the first two episodes of which are currently streaming on Apple TV+ — finds Segel’s Jimmy and his colleagues, Gaby (Emmy nominee Jessica Williams) and Paul (Oscar nominee Harrison Ford), digging deeper into their own issues, including the latter’s Parkinson’s diagnosis.
