This post contains spoilers for "Black Adam."
DC's "Black Adam" props up Teth-Adam (Dwayne Johnson) as an unconventional super-powered being who reluctantly winds up in a position to protect the modern world from evil. Despite his undefined stance on heroism, Teth-Adam teams up with the Justice Society to stop the Intergang from acquiring a crown of primordial power connected to the demon champion, Sabbac. After Intergang's leader, Ishmael (Marwan Kenzari), manipulates events to trigger the rebirth of Sabbac in his host body, Black Adam and the Justice Society of America attempt to fight this super-powered, awakened demon who seems to be powerful beyond measure. The battle is rife with hurdles, but dogged determination and sacrifice allow Teth-Adam and the others to overpower and kill Sabbac.
There are several differences between "Black Adam" and its comics storyline, including the details of Teth-Adam's origins and the origins of the Jsa members. The...

Geoffrey Thorne is very detail-oriented. That helps explain the density of Green Lantern #1, his new book bringing the Green Lantern Corps into the Infinite Frontier era.
“I apologized to Dexter [Soy, one of his creative partners on Green Lantern] and to Tom Raney [his art partner on Future State: Green Lantern],” Thorne tells us in an interview about the new run, “because the first things they had to draw that I wrote had a cast of thousands.” But it works: the new book launches with Lanterns from several corps accompanied by a veritable who’s who of DC’s cosmic stable standing in a smoking pile on Oa.
Thorne comes to the book in a period of great transition; for the Green Lantern Corps, which has to deal with a new intergalactic government for the first time, throwing their role as the galaxy’s self-appointed police force into disarray. For the characters – Keli Quintanela’s Teen Lantern, the 11-year-old with a bootleg (?) Oan power gauntlet...

Chantal Thuy has successfully shapeshifted into a series regular for Season 4 of The CW’s Black Lightning, where she since season 1 has recurred as metahuman Grace Choi.
“Chantal Thuy embodies the character of Grace Choi,” showrunner Salim Akil said in a statement. “I am sure our Black Lightning fans knew, especially those who follow the Grace and Anissa relationship storyline, that having Chantal join as a series regular was only a matter of time. I am elated to finally welcome her officially to the team.”

It’s somehow almost 2021, which means the DC Universe is about to enter its Future State, the big two month crossover that kicks off the new year by pausing its regular line, and diving deep into the wild, varied timelines and parallel universes for new angles from fresh creators. And we are happy to have your exclusive first look at the February covers and solicitations for the Justice League family of books.
Since half the fun of solicits is trying to piece together what’s happening in the book from the 50 words and a cover, we decided to engage in some wild, semi-informed speculation on what might be coming from DC’s event.
Let’s get right to it: Future State has a very strong Seven Soldiers of Victory vibe.
The original Seven Soldiers were briefly a superteam from the ’40s, brought back sporadically whenever a comic needed a nostalgia boost,...

With one of Marvel’s first big story arcs to be rolled out next year, Iron Man 2020, still being months away from kicking off, you’d naturally think we’d run out of things to talk about. But instead, it’s proven to be the latest exciting theme for the House of Ideas to run with for a wave of variant covers.
Just yesterday, we showed you some kick-ass redesigns for some of the publisher’s most popular icons, and the fun hasn’t stopped there. After feasting our eyes on some truly sweet looking alternate takes on Spider-Man, Elektra, Black Cat and Doctor Doom, yet another batch has been thrown our way.
Like those presented before, you can expect to find these variants on shelves beginning in December. I think I’m most partial to the Miles Morales and Venom reimaginings in this particular gallery, though you may identify other favorites of your own.

Secrets of Sinister House takes us back to Red Rain Batman just in time for Halloween.
Fifth weeks are odd beasts in the comics world. They throw off the natural rhythm of comic publishing, with one book every two or four weeks, and end up stacking some months ane leaving others barren. Fortunately, comic companies have found fun and creative ways to deal with them. Like having Bill Sienkiewicz ink a John Romita Jr. drawing of Vampire Batman from Red Rain chasing down a possibly envampired Joker.
Secrets of Sinister House is, like all of DC's seasonal anthology books, 80 pages of short stories, in and out of continuity, with mix and match creative teams that let us get introduced to some new creators and duck back into favorite continuities. Included in this anthology are:

Known for his Emmy-winning roles playing curmudgeons, ranging from Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Carl in the Pixar film Up, actor Ed Asner's true character is that of a philanthropist and loving father who shared his passion for comic books with his children.

New York Comic Con has once again rushed by in a giant, fun, crazy blur, and although I didn’t get to nearly all the things I was hoping to, I did have a rockin’ time and see some really cool things I can share.
The first of these were a few great panels I landed seats for, including, as is my tradition, the Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel. If you don’t know I love the current Tmnt, then what are you, new here? But seriously, I love it. And each panel I have gone to brings something new and different.
This panel (with Andrea Romano (voice director), Eric Bauza (Tiger Claw), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Shredder), Greg Cipes (Mikey), Rob Paulsen (Donnie), and Ciro Nieli (Executive Producer)) was particularly fun, because one of the things they did was a live read of episode #420, “The Super Shredder,” which...

I’ve said before that, despite liking to attend all flavors of fandom and comics conventions, including (clearly) the media guest-focused cons, I really love Baltimore Comic Con because it has stayed so focused on comics and comics creators. I’m happy to report that this has not changed.
I had a great time in Baltimore this year, doing some of the things that make me happiest at comic cons, like walking the exhibit hall and wandering Artist Alley to see what new things old friends are up to, meet folks whose work I know but whom I’ve never chatted with, and flip through the work of creators I haven’t ever encountered before. Amongst the fun things I discovered were this nifty accordion-style comic by Christa Cassano and Dean Haspiel; a gorgeous limited edition coloring book by Charles Vess, whose work I’ve loved for a long time...

In his second arc on Ultimate X-Men, title “Return to Weapon X”, writer Mark Millar decides to not make everything about Wolverine and gives readers an in-depth look at the Ultimate Weapon X program. The Weapon X program in the Ultimate Universe is a blacker than black ops group where Shield uses mutants for deep cover and wetwork missions while experimenting on them and torturing them to make them more docile participants in these attacks, which are often on countries with “illegal genetic” material or technology. (Even if these issues have little too much bodily fluid humor and semi-dated pop culture references, Millar is a good at writing political doublespeak.) I know we’re never supposed to judge a book by its cover, but we do whether consciously or not, and I certainly did with this one. Just look at it: a semi-naked woman with a piece of cloth barely covering her lady parts, squatting(!), with the title “Monster Massacre” overhead. It’s like an 80s hair metal band cover for an album of songs about drinking behind the bleachers, staying out past curfew and not doing your homework – the stench of adolescence is unfortunately all over this anthology of short comics based around monsters.
Which isn’t to say it’s all bad – put your best foot forward as they say, and this book does just that with a classic comic by legends Jack Kirby and Joe Simon called The Angel of Death. It’s about a small town menaced by a monster in the night and has smatterings...

I didn’t jump onto reviewing this mini series last week because my ill feelings on the mess that was Avengers vs X-Men was too fresh and I think my knee jerk reaction to AvX: Consequences would be to dislike it. That being said, Issue #1 of Consequences was okay. Starting with Wolverine taking his pupils to Wakanda to help but being kicked out due to the struggling people of the recently all but destroyed city not taking too kindly to mutant seemed an obvious beginning. This of course just felt like another fight brewing between heroes waiting to happen but instead we shift focus.

Jumping to Scott Summers, who’s locked up in an undisclosed prison and learning he’s going to...

12 issues of a DC Comics title can mean only one thing: the anticipated annual. Superman Annual #1delivers two times the action and drama we get on a monthly basis from the Man of Steel. It's an exceptional sci-fi laced one-shot that leaves questions unanswered and plenty of opportunity for future encounters with the villain of the story.
In Superman Annual #1, our Kryptonian hero coming face to face with alien super power Helspont. The intergalactic villain comes to Earth to assassinate members of his own Daemonite which took up residence on our planet and lost sight of their original mission. At the same time, Helspont recruits special operatives to target super heroes for extermination.
Writer Fabian Nicieza does a fantastic job adapting Scott Lobdell's script to the printed page. The story is complex and engaging. He uses the extra pages of the book to reveal the back story of Helspont...

On Sunday, August 12th 2012, the comic book industry lost another legend in artist Joe Kubert. Though not as well known outside the geek community for his work, Kubert is nonetheless a pioneer in the business. With a long running career stretching almost as far back as what many refer to as the Golden Age of Comics. Kubert is best known for his work in the late 50’s and the 60’s for DC Comics with characters including Hawkman, Tarzan, The Viking Prince and the war stories of “G.I. Combat” featuring Sgt. Rock and the Haunted Tank. In the 1960’s he and his wife Muriel moved to Dover, NJ and founded the Kubert School of Art, while raising their five children. Though he slowed on his art duties for comics he was a fixture at the school and his work has influenced many. Notable alumni from the school include Shane Davis (Superman: Earth One,...

In an interview with Comic Book Resources, writer Kieron Gillen has talked in detail about his five part miniseries, Avengers Vs. X-Men: Consequences. This will be released weekly in October, and Tom Raney, Mark Brooks, Steve Kurth and Dale Eaglesham have all signed up to handle the artwork on the series (the fifth artist has yet to be revealed). Marvel often release these epilogue style books after a big event, but judging from the comments below, this one will be far more essential a purchase - especially when it's in the hands of the brilliant writer of titles like Uncanny X-Men and Journey Into Mystery. "One Team Wins. One Team Loses. Everybody Pays." On What To Expect From Avengers Vs. X-Men: Consequences: 'AvX' is a complete story told over 12 issues and you get closure, but because it's the Marvel Universe there's always a lot of other stuff you want to explore.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

There was a time when just having one Incredible Hulk yelling, "Smash," was more than enough to satiate comic lovers' lust for unwonton destruction and chaos. But, those days are over. Welcome to The Pull List Comic Reviews! First off, a huge thanks to John Carle for covering the column last week, he did a fantastic job. You’re sitting there, asking yourself “How in all that is holy is Lobo: Highway to Hell the Pull of the Week?” Believe me, I’m asking myself that very same question. You see I’ve never dug Lobo. I’ve read a good chunk of his various issues over the years and I’ve never seen the attraction to the character, but seeing as variety is the spice of life, I figured I’d give this a shot.
