John Belushi was to be a guest star on this episode, showing him underwater wearing cement shoes. He died shortly before the episode aired, so the scene was cut and replaced by a segment with William Conrad. After the success of the "Naked Gun" films, ABC-TV re-aired episodes of Police Squad! (1982) and hoped to re-edit the Belushi scene back into the episode. However, the footage could not be found and is now presumed lost or destroyed.
Jim Abrahams, David Zucker and Jerry Zucker played a prank on director Joe Dante during the audition process. They asked staff writer Tino Insana to audition and then proceeded to act extremely rude and uninterested during his performance.
Frank's line, "You take a chance getting up in the morning, crossing the street, or sticking your face in the fan." was recycled in the first "Naked Gun" film.
Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker and David Zucker never intended Police Squad! (1982) to be a TV show, but rather a made for TV movie (which explains why none of them were "upset" when the show canceled after only 6 episodes).
