The Moriarty Brothers all use the middle name James, which explains why the stories about Sherlock Holmes in-universe years later mistakenly combine them as one James Moriarty.
William's true name is never revealed. He simply takes the identity of the real one after ensuring his body couldn't be identified from the fire.
Albert serves as the proxy for William when someone whom they cannot fully trust wishes to contact the Lord of Crime.
