Eventually, Korean-based projects made their way across the world following the end of the military rule in South Korea. Obviously, there would have been much more to watch during that time than just Death Row Prisoner (1956).

Look now, I’m as excited as the next person for all things Kim Seon-Ho, but the way The Tyrant banks on his popularity and then gives him about 5 minutes of screen time simply baffles me. Just because someone is ostensibly the “main” character of the show doesn’t mean you’ve got yourself a Hannibal Lecter who can show his face for 15 minutes and win an Oscar for it. Oh, Kim Seon-Ho is great in the show; we don’t even get to see his dimples, but there’s no plot to carry his wonderful acting; that’s the point I’m trying to make here. I went into The Tyrant completely blind, and so I had no idea it was made by the same people who made the movie The Witch Pt. 1: The Subversion. Though if I had known, I don’t think it would’ve made...

The world of teen rom-com is a gift that keeps giving and giving, even when we’re not really asking for it. I could say it feels like the genre has become oversaturated, but that would feel like an understatement because of the rate at which Ott platforms keep churning these out. But as I complain, I’m reminded of the comfort that some of these shows provide. While high school dramas can focus on many different subjects, most of the content revolves around teen romance. Specifically, there’s an entire list of shows that involve a very intelligent and organized girl (can’t relate) with multiple (perfectly handsome) love interests. Maybe this is a fantasy of the millennials writing these books (since TV isn’t ever original anymore), the ones who grew up watching shows that emulated the line “If he tugs at your ponytail, he likes you,” or...

Is it real? Or is it all just drama? This is a question that applies to most reality TV, but Netflix’s latest Japanese reality show Love Like a K-drama begs the question: can feelings blossom from a kiss on screen? Eight contestants compete to win hearts and places in mini K-drama episodes—an emotional journey with a devastating ending? We’re not so sure yet; however, it’s the contestants that make the show quite intriguing—the heart of reality. In the first four episodes of Love Like a K-drama, we got to meet the eight contestants, four Japanese women and four Korean men, while they tried to get to know each other. While at first it was all sweet like mochi, as the show progressed, things got dramatic quickly. There’s a lot to unpack in the next four episodes, coming out on the 5th of December, so before then,...

Netflix has released the Top 10 viewing numbers for the week of February 13, and without any new high-profile releases last week, the charts mostly remained the same as last time. Penn Badgley’s series “You” and the Reese Withspoon-Ashton Kutcher rom-com “Your Place or Mine” did well again, the latter presumably helped by Valentine’s Day last Tuesday.
The fourth season of “You” ended up in the Top 10 in 88 countries with 64.1 million hours viewed, down from 92 million views its launch week with the first five episodes having 38 million views. The first and third seasons also continue to be watched with 22.4 million and 15.6 million hours, respectively.
By comparison, “Your Place or Mine” increased its views to 52.8 million hours vs. the previous week’s 51.2 million views. Again, the romantic comedy from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna probably got a nice bump from V-Day. Other movies returning to the...

Superhero projects were, perhaps predictably, the most pirated movies and TV shows in 2021. But new data reveals that it was actually a monster film that was the most pirated movie of the year: “Godzilla vs Kong.”
A new report released by tech firm Akamai on Wednesday put the Warner Bros. monster mash-up on top, followed by “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” and “Black Widow” respectively. Two other super projects made the list, with James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” landing in the number six spot, and “Wonder Woman 1984” squeaking in at number eight.
Warner Bros.’ entire 2021 slate was released on HBO Max simultaneous with their theatrical release, but only in the U.S., which is likely why so many of those titles showed up on this list. Indeed, the WB films “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “The Suicide Squad,” “WW84” and “Mortal Kombat” were all released on streaming in the U.S.
