Gene Siskel - Host: [reviewing "Mortal Kombat"] The special effects are often sensational, the locations are Asian-exotic, and the cast of characters is clearly drawn with appealing types. Only the amount of fighting in the back half of the picture gets in the way. But I'm still giving thumbs up to "Mortal Kombat". A lot of effort went into this production. I've never played the video game "Mortal Kombat", but after seeing this movie, I'm actually attempt it. It's a lot of fun.
Roger Ebert - Host: You know, I can't, uh... really give it thumbs up, although I'm right...
Gene Siskel - Host: You should.
Roger Ebert - Host: ...I'm right in the middle on it.
Gene Siskel - Host: Weren't you surprised by the quality? You...
Roger Ebert - Host: You know the one thing that bothered me was it was so dark. I wonder if the theater was trying to save money on electricity.
Gene Siskel - Host: I saw it on the best theater screen in Chicago.
Roger Ebert - Host: Oh, well I didn't see it in that theater, because I know the one you're talking about.
Gene Siskel - Host: Yeah.
Roger Ebert - Host: And it looked murky. It just didn't...
Gene Siskel - Host: Then blame the theater, don't punish the film.
Roger Ebert - Host: Okay, well I can only review the film I saw, but I'll tell ya one thing that was funny as I walked out. The kids who play this "Mortal Kombat", which as you know has been very controversial because of its level of violence, were kind of disappointed that the killings in the movie weren't nearly as sensational as the ones in the game, where people have unbelievably horrible things done to them.
Gene Siskel - Host: [sarcastic] Well, I'm terribly sorry for those children.
Roger Ebert - Host: You would've been amazed, since you felt the movie was too violent.
Gene Siskel - Host: The movie, I thought, was... you had a better time, admit it, you had a better time than you thought you were going to have at this picture.
Roger Ebert - Host: Well, since I thought I was gonna have a very BAD time, that would be true almost no matter what I thought.
