Category:Northeastern United States
The Northeastern United States is a region that can be defined in various ways, usually by the states included.
Always included are the six states of New England: Maine / Vermont / New Hampshire / Massachusetts / Connecticut / Rhode Island. This region is bordering the Mid-Atlantic states to the west.
The US Census Bureau counts New England as Division 1 and the Northern Mid-Atlantic states (New York / Pennsylvania / New Jersey) as Division 2 of the "Northeast" region which then borders the "Midwest" and the "South", by this definition. (As of 2024, these nine states are also the definition of "Northeastern United States" in the English Wikipedia.)
Other definitions may include even more states to the Northeast Region:
- Adding the Southern Mid-Atlantic states results in Maryland / Washington, D.C. / Virginia / Delaware / West Virginia being part of the region.
- Biogeographers may leave out the Southern Mid-Atlantic, but instead include four more states into the "Northeastern United States" as part of the "Nearctic": Indiana / Ohio / West Virginia / Michigan.
- Splitting the United States into quadrants could also result in the inclusion of Wisconsin / Minnesota / Iowa / Illinois, and possibly also more states towards the south - such a division completely ignores sociocultural and geographical reality.
