English: Western New Guinea — the western half of the island of New Guinea and smaller islands to its west, is an autonomous region in Indonesia. The area was previously one single province named "Irian Jaya" in 1969 after it was annexed into Indonesia; in 2002 this was renamed to "Papua", and in 2003 divided into two, creating a separate province for "West Papua"; these two autonomous provinces have since been subdivided again, and there are now 6 autonomous provinces at end of 2022. The Free Papua Movement disputes Indonesian sovereignty on the region which has a Christian majority, unlike the rest of Indonesia where Islam is dominant (except Bali where Hinduism is dominant).
