[edit]DescriptionColonial Expo 1896.jpg |
English: The medal for the 1896 Colonial Exposition held in Rouen. The obverse depicts in the foreground a young maiden knitting while she sits against the trunk of a tree as cattle graze in a field behind her. There is an inscription at the top that reads "Normannia Nutrix". The reverse is a depiction of the city of Rouen, with the city's name set slightly above the horizon. There also appears on the reverse an inscription following the top edge that reads "Exposition Nationale et Coloniale", and the date "MDCCCXCVI" along the bottom edge. The medal was crafted by famed medalist Louis-Oscar Roty and is an example of the Art Nouveau movement. |
