Speedy tagging
[edit]Hi - thanks for the work. However a single image can quite happily be a gallery until more media turn up. Not that they are "good" galleries & they needed the <gallery></gallery> tags & also the {{Uncat}} tag too!. Regards --Herby talk thyme 09:22, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for info - I'll fix them up instead next time. Best wishes, How do you turn this on (talk) 10:34, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
You left some messages on my talk page regarding authors
[edit]Hi, you left me three messages regarding the authors of some screenshots of the game Sauerbraten which I transferred from the en wiki. Well firstly regarding lisence of the game, this game is a public domain work. The code is open source and the content is community sourced also under a general public lisence, commercial or any use permitted explicitly. As for the authors of the pictures in particular, these authors names are as their wikipedia accounts and released as such into the public domain (one of these authors, Eirhul, is the main author and project overseer of the games programming and content and can be found under the same name at sourceforge where the game is based and has distributed over 1.7 million public lisenced downloads). None of the pictures are tagged but the message you gave me said they are but these messages say I haven't listed authors ot where I found the work etc. I suggest you look over these pictures again where all this info is in the correct place, in order with the upload template (note one of these four pictures was uploaded without any info for a few minutes but I realised immediately and corrected it, as quickly as that, over one week ago). If you recheck, I think you will find all the info was listed all along. The links to the three pictures are listed as the last three messages on my talk page. If you would also like to verify the lisencing of the game, please go to http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/sauerbraten/ where you will find the relevant info. Again, if you still need further info please tell me. RTG (talk) 04:49, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
- Also, if you are interested in my reason for transferring these pictures, you will find them at http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauerbraten_(video_game) where all pictures are commons pictures. All best RTG (talk) 04:53, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Tense in English
[edit]Hi,
I’ve got a question : why did you change “Jean-Jacques Monanteuil ... is” in “Jean-Jacques Monanteuil was”? In French, we usually use the present tense (called “historic present”), it doesn’t exist in English? Cdlt, VIGNERON * discut. 12:28, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- It doesn't exist in English. Since the person is not alive, they are referred to in the past tense. Best wishes, How do you turn this on (talk) 19:19, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks, now I know it. Still, that seems very weird for me. In french the “historic present” looks like a present but is like a past tense (I think it exist in German too, I will check). Cdlt, VIGNERON * discut. 14:15, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

Reviewer closure
[edit]I note your comments. However if you read the page it says a reviewer or an admin may close these. Unless I am missing something you are neither? As such please revert your change. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:21, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Actually Mifter closed, and Kanonkas reverted. I simply reverted back to Mifter's version. Mifter is a reviewer. How do you turn this on (talk) 12:40, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Indeed - so to point that out is fine - then let them sort it out. For me, reverting anyone without discussion with those concerned is not what I would call collaborative editing (although I am aware that it is something that en wp people tend to do). --Herby talk thyme 12:43, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Issue solved. --Kanonkas(talk) 13:57, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Herby, I'm uncertain where you get the idea I'm not collaboratively editing. I would think coming to my talk page regarding an issue that has nothing to do with you, and accusing me of not collaboratively editing is a pretty bad faith gesture as far as I am concerned. After reverting, I immediately let Kanonkas know I'd reverted him. And what do you mean, "something that en wp people tend to do"? I unfortunately don't know what you mean. Best wishes, How do you turn this on (talk) 19:15, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Why would it have nothing to do with me? Anything on commons is of interest to those who work here surely. Your edit was on a community page anyway which is how I saw it.
- I would prefer not to see reversions of any folks good faith edits without discussing it with them. Not doing that strikes me as lacking some courtesy maybe. I don't recall the last time I saw that sort of thing here on Commons - I do recall seeing it on en wp.
- I've made plenty of mistakes in my time as a Wikimedian - most folk have been good enough to point them out to me & let me fix them. I guess we just see things differently. --Herby talk thyme 20:08, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
- Again, I'm uncertain where you get the idea we "see things differently". I already said I let Kanonkas know what he did was wrong. Have you asked Kanonkas why he reverted Mifter without any discussion? No? Instead you came to my talk page asking me to revert my "change" because I wasn't an admin or reviewer - are you suggesting that had I been one, I could revert at will? I was simply reverting to the last version before Kanonkas made his mistake. In any case, it's not like I reverted him and left. I left a note on Mifter's talk page explaining what he did was wrong. Kanonkas made a mistake, I'm sure he doesn't mind me fixing it - indeed, he apologized immediately, and has written "issue solved" above. I think quite highly of Kanonkas, even offering him a nomination of bureaucrat, despite only being active here a short time. I thought I was doing him a favor by correcting him. Next time, should I just leave it? I started editing on Commons to avoid petty squabbles like this one. Perhaps I should just turn right back round back to English Wikipedia, where I frankly felt much more welcomed by more senior editors. It isn't nice to be accused of editing the "wrong" way by a pretty well-respected administrator. How do you turn this on (talk) 20:36, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

Fair enough - let's start this again. You do make some good points, at least the one about Kanonkas getting it wrong & me not approaching him. I guess I would merely say that you had already done so so there was little point in me adding to that.
Let's agree that we are both refugees from "petty squabbles" and maybe that is all either of us need to know really. I love Commons and - mostly :) - the folk here. Please ignore what I've said above. If I have a point that I would like to make it would be that, unless there is some harm to the project or other urgency, personally I prefer folks to sort out their own mistakes. It is actually a two edged sword - they have to admit to a mistake as well as fix it!
Please stick around and help, ignore an occasionally grumpy Commons worker? :) Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:07, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind response. Obviously I don't intend to leave now, and hopefully I will become busier here over time. Best wishes, How do you turn this on (talk) 11:05, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Yeah, I added some images from the same user on Flickr. For some reason I was under the impression they were okay, which they clearly were not. I will pay closer attention in the future! Thanks.
I think that the owner of this image is from the insidedesi.com, because I have requested that user to change the license to a Attribution Creative Commons, from All rights reserved. Which he accepted (see Flickr link). Mohsin (talk) 15:43, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Hello Amicon!
Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 16:49, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Flickr reviewing
[edit]Heh, yeah. I am really cleaning those categories out :) - its really easy except for one of the statuses, but I am really getting good at this. I am having some off-wiki admin coaching, so I am doing a lot as of late.Mitch32(Want help? See here!) 20:26, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- We'll see. I am very happy working here, and my judgement is getting better here :) - I used to really suck with the Commons. Its a little shocking that I am now 109 or so edits from 1000 edits. Again, we will see what happens. I will ask my admin coach and if its alright, a co-nom can be done.Mitch32(Want help? See here!) 20:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Highest resolution
[edit]I was going to upload the higher resolution image but the photo turned 90 degrees [1] as compared to [2] does the software on commons have a way to auto correct this problem? Sirex98 (talk) 20:15, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think there's a bot that can rotate. You could, however, always rotate it yourself before uploading. How do you turn this on (talk) 20:21, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
Images
[edit]Hi! Glad you;ve noticed. Thanks for your help. I recently found the filter on flickr so I will be glad to upload images. I;ve always been very good at cropping existing images but I will be uploading a huge amount from now on so feel free to propose it. I'll try to make sure I upload the same sort of license images. One or two images though may often be difficult to judge. Can I ask what you think of the image I'll show you in a minute?Ernst Stavro Blofeld (talk) 23:01, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah sure. How do you turn this on (talk) 23:03, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
This image of Salma Hayek. Do you think this is copyrighted? I am not convinced either way but it looks of quite a poor quality so it could be a genuine amateur shot. Probably a vio thats why I didn't upload. I'll let you judge. Ernst Stavro Blofeld (talk) 23:13, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
- If the image doesn't have a full version, I always am cautious. It's only showing her head. Maybe the best thing to do is to just ask - I really can't be sure. How do you turn this on (talk) 23:18, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
High Res Images
[edit]I am uploading the high res for the new ones now. You are referring to an image I uploaded when I was not aware of the "All sizes" button on Flickr. All the ones I uploaded after I was made aware of that should be high resolution. Ruigeroeland (talk) 11:59, 5 December 2008 (UTC)
Good luck in your RFA, the nom statement accurately and succinctly says it all and if you hang in there things should turn out alright. Cheers, Cirt (talk) 07:01, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
- This is uncomfortable for me, but can I ask you to accept my apologies for my hectoring tone on your RfA, it was only with some reflection on my part that I realised that I have no complaint with you, but that your RfA was acting as a lightning rod for some of my frustrations with existing admins in the Gryffindor de-admin drama. It was wrong of me to consider using your RfA as a soap-box with which to lecture the community at Commons:Administrators so again please accept my apologies.
- Don't worry about it at all - think nothing of it :-) Best wishes, Amicon (talk) 09:24, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

I was going to oppose on your RfA after seeing this edit mentioned on that page. Instead of it I think that is more productive leaving a note to you: please be careful on copyfraud claims. Some wikimedians devote their free time on researching for public domain works and sometimes the source of origin claims for copyright. Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag and w:Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp. may help you to understand some parallel issues. Good luck on your RfA! :) Lugusto • ※ 22:11, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think the uploader should avoid adding the flickrreview tag if the flickr uploader doesn't own the image. But obviously, I'll be more careful. Thanks for your kind note. Best wishes, – amicon 22:17, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
