spatchcock
語源
The noun is probably derived from one of the following:
- A variant of spitchcock (“eel split lengthwise かつ broiled”).[1][2][3] from Middle English spiche-coke,[4] The further etymology is uncertain; the following possibilities have been suggested:
- From Middle English *speche, *spiche (“to split”) + cock, coken (“to allow (something) to cook; to cook”).[5][6]
- From spik (“animal fat, especially lard”),[7] spik, spike (“large nail; pointed stud”),[8] or spit, spite (“rod for cooking meat, spit; pointed object”);[9] + cok (“male of the common domestic fowl, cock, rooster”).[10]
- From Irish spot (the past participle of spothaim (“to cut; to split”)) or spoctha (the 過去分詞 of spochaim, a variant of spothaim) + coc (“male of the common domesic fowl, cock, rooster”).[11]
A derivation from (di)spatch (“to dispose of speedily; to make a speedy end of”) + cock[12][13] is now thought to be unlikely.[6][11][14]
The verb is derived from the noun.[15]
