editFrom Arabic مَلِك (malik, “king”). From Proto-Semitic *malk-. Cognate to Hebrew מֶלֶךְ (mélekh, “king”) and מָלַךְ (malákh, “to rule”), and Aramaic מַלְכָּא (malkā, “king”) and מְלַךְ (m'laḵ, “to rule”).
