editMost probably derived from a substrate along with Romanian măgar. Alternatively from *margar, from *margë, from Gothic *𐌼𐌰𐍂𐌷𐍃 (*marhs, “horse”), from Proto-Germanic *marhaz, from Proto-Indo-European *márkos (“horse”), even though the existence of this root is controversial.
