From Proto-Finnic *salmi, from Proto-Finno-Permic *śolma. Cognates include Northern Sami čoalbmi (narrow in lake),[1] Skolt Sami čuäʹlmm (sound, narrows)[2] and possibly Udmurt сюм (śum, bay, cove).[3] Finnish dialectal jolma is a Saami loan.[4]
