Joshua Wong Chi-fung (Chinese: 黃之鋒, born 13 October 1996)[1] is a Hong Kong student activist who is the convenor of the Hong Kong Student Activist Group Scholarism.[1][2] He received widespread attention from the Hong Kong media when he led Scholarism to protest against Moral and National Education in 2012.[3] As one of the most prominent leaders of student activism in Hong Kong, Wong is regarded by some as "an embodiment of anti-national education body's energy"[3] and "a symbol of defiance against the government"[4], especially from members of the pro-democracy camp, while others denounce him as "opposing the Government for the sake of opposition"[5], especially from members of the pro-Beijing camp.

Joshua is now an active member fighting for the inclusion of civic nomination in the 2017 Chief Executive Election.[6]

Personal Life

Joshua was born in Hong Kong in 1996 and was diagnosed with dyslexia at birth.[7] He took an active role in society in Hong Kong at a young age, and the anti-High Speed Rail protests was one of the first civil movements he took part in.[6]

Wong is also a student of United Christian College (Kowloon East). On 29 May 2011, Wong set up the student activists' group Scholarism with one of his schoolmates Ivan Lam.[8]

Controversy

On October 1 2012, after informed of the ferry collision accident which took place in Lamma Island, incumbent Chief Executive CY Leung immediately set out to the scene to oversee the rescue efforts.[9] After being informed that CY Leung is present in Lamma Island, Wong, an active protestor against the Hong Kong Government, posted a message on Facebook, hinting that he regretted not being able to be present in Lamma Island to protest against the Chief Executive.[10] His Facebook comments sparked anger and frustration among some Hong Kong citizens, who believed that Wong blatantly ignored the importance of search and rescue efforts, and that he valued "anti-government protests" over "saving lives". Some even criticized Wong as "cold-blooded and ignorant".[11] After being informed of the casualties and severity of the incident, Wong withdrew his statement and apologized, saying that he shouldn't have made such a comment before fully understanding the circumstances of the incident.[12]
