In 2021, Park played the role of Crown Prince Yi Hwi in the historical series The King's Affection.[20] For her portrayal of the cross-dressing heroine, Park received the Top Excellence Actress Award at the 2021 KBS Drama Awards and a Best Actress nomination at the 58th Baeksang Arts Awards.[21] Park also won the Best Actor Award at the 49th Korean Broadcasting Awards for her role.[22] The drama was also awarded Best Telenovela at the 50th International Emmy Awards.[23][24]
In 2022, Park starred in Park Hoon-jung's action-horror film The Witch: Part 2. The Other One, the sequel to the 2018 film The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion. In the same year, she starred in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, playing the titular role of Woo Young-woo, a lawyer who is an autistic savant.[25] It was later revealed that the production team waited over a year for Park to take part in the drama, after she reportedly declined the role because she "felt like the series wasn't something that [she] should approach lightly".[9][26] Nonetheless, this performance earned her acclaim from both critics and audiences.[27] Through her portrayal, the drama, which aired on the new channel ENA, started with an audience rating of 0.9% and finished with 17.5%, sparking syndrome-like popularity in Korea.[28] The drama was a global success, ranking in the top 10 most watched non-English TV series on Netflix for 21 weeks.[29] Park's compelling performance earned her international recognition, winning the Best Actor Award at the Asia Contents Awards [30] and the Rising Star Award for TV at the Critics' Choice Awards' Asian Pacific Cinema & Television division.[31] At the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards, Park was awarded the Grand Prize in Television.[3] In October 2023, she opens the 28th Busan International Film Festival’s opening ceremony becoming the festival's first ever solo host.[32]
Acting style
Park has been praised for her ability to embody all types of roles, be it shy, flamboyant, daring, passionate, eccentric or complex with obvious competence and in the most realistic way possible.[33] In an interview with India Today, she said what motivates her to take on more acting challenges is the desire to experience various kinds of life and the immediate sense of accomplishment she gets once she has done it.[34] The Korea Herald reported that while preparing for her role in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, she studied like a student preparing for an exam, she tried to memorize the script by writing down the lines on the paper, find ways to clearly deliver the lines and revise the sentence.[35] Speaking to The Korea Times, Park said that the experience of playing the first Korean female king in The King's Affection was overwhelming. She added, "Instead of trying to disguise myself as a man, I tried to focus on showing why she has to pretend that she is a man".[36] Her ability to sing and play instruments such as guitar and violin has aided her acting prowess as seen in Castaway Diva and Do You Like Brahms?.[37][38]
