During February and March 2017, several new Passion Pit songs were uploaded on YouTube on the account The Wishart Group (from the name of a project started by Michael Angelakos and dedicated to supporting musicians by providing them with legal, educational and healthcare services, with a focus on mental health, a topic on which Angelakos has been especially forthcoming), foreshadowing a fourth album for 2017. The songs have since been taken down, but Angelakos announced that he would give a downloadable copy of the album for free to anyone who retweeted neuroscientist Michael F. Wells' tweet on the importance of science and research.<ref>{{Cite news|url=http://www.spin.com/2017/03/passion-pit-weneedscience-retweet-tremendous-sea-of-love-download/|title=If You Retweet Passion Pit to Support Science, You'll Also Get Their Album for Free|date=2017-03-23|website=Spin.com|access-date=2017-03-25}}</ref>

'''Tremendous Sea of Love'''

is an album for us, for me, and for you.
Something happened when I started making music "professionally.”
What happened is I forgot how fun, how beautiful it was to share the version of my music that was not the "product."
When I say product, I mean the b version of the song, or album, that was done, finished, ready for a sale.
Revisions are important, but we are so good at revising, so concerned with presenting perfect versions of ourselves that we miss the point. We become upset when people don’t fully understand us, or assume things. . .
That, my friends, is the business we are in. No, we were in.
Because each song was quickly rendered, or written the night before it was uploaded, [and] was mixed to the best of my ability (after years of people telling me I couldn’t mix).
They were not perfect, but they were honest.
Honesty is important because clearly we can, as humans, detect falsehoods, and yet today we are discussing “alternative truths.”

This is not crazy, it is just a message saying:

ALL WE HAVE LEFT IS THE FIRST DRAFT

ALL WE HAVE LEFT ARE THE SPELLING ERRORS

ALL WE HAVE LEFT ARE THE ZITS AND IMPERFECTIONS WE E IT OUT
ALL WE HAVE LEFT IS THE CONFESSION THAT WE DO NOT KNOW EVERYTHING

Because today to edit, to revise, is to propagate a culture, A BUSINESS that is archaic, that is scared of acknowledging the truth and that is saying YOU ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH.
I wrote this album to tell myself and to tell you that you were always good enough. That the money we spend agreeing with these people, it is adding insult to injury.
You are tremendous, you are truly the reason I have, have always, and could continue to have anything.
And you deserve a thank you.
I do not need your money.
I just want you, I just NEED you, to listen to me. No money can quantify what that means to me.
I really, truly love you.

Thank you.

M Angelakos.

Tremendous Sea of Love is the fourth studio album by Passion Pit, self-released on YouTube on March 24, 2017, and later officially released on July 28, 2017. Frontman and producer Michael Angelakos expressed a desire to embrace authenticity and rawness with the album in interviews. It was positively received by critics, who noted this intentional rawness and a more mature overall sound compared to the band's previous album, Kindred.

Background and production

[edit]

Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos had expressed a desire in a late 2015 interview to make his music more authentic, and a more accurate reflection of his own life.[1] During February and March 2017, he uploaded self-released ten songs forming Tremendous Sea of Love to a YouTube channel for The Wishart Group, Angelakos's company that offers legal and healthcare support for musicians.[2][3][4] The songs have since been taken down, but Angelakos announced that he would give a downloadable copy of the album for free to anyone who retweeted neuroscientist Michael F. Wells' tweet on the importance of science and research.[5]

Angelakos posted a now-deleted reflection on the album to Twitter, part of which stated that "today to edit, to revise, is to propagate a culture […] that is scared of acknowledging the truth and that is saying YOU ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH".[1]

On July 12, an official release date was set for July 28 on all streaming services.[6]

Tremendous Sea of Love was positively received by critics. Ian Cohen of Pitchfork praised the album's rawness, and said it was a reaction to its predecessor, Kindred.[8] The New Zealand Herald's George Fenwick also praised the album's "startling clarity" and "rawness", further stating that though some elements felt "disparate and scattered", that this may have been intentional on Angelakos's part to challenge established industry norms.[9] Consequence of Sound's Tyler Clark argued that the album was a "return to [the] no-stakes music-making" of Angelakos's earlier records, such as Chunk of Change. Clark also called the album a "tremendously personal sonic journal".[1]

The album also received reactions prior to its release on streaming. Vox Magazine said the album was a "far cry from a marketable project", but said it had a more polished and mature sound than Kindred. They further commented that the band appeared to be "prioritising artistry over commercial success" by self-publishing the songs to YouTube.[2]
