Muck is a free-to-play video game created by developer and YouTuber Dani. It released on Steam on June 5, 2021[1] for Windows and later received a MacOS and Linux version.[2][unreliable source?]
Premise and Gameplay
Premise
Muck is a roguelike survival video game,[3] where you spawn on a island in the middle of the ocean, and try to obtain materials to rebuild the crashed ship to sail away. After rebuilding the ship, you need to collect 5 gems via beating 'guardians' to collect a gem. After finishing collecting the gems, a dragon appears named 'Bob', acting as the final boss.[citation needed]
The players can also challenge 'Gronk', a miniboss wielding two swords.
Gameplay
The game features a building and crafting system and is primarily meant to be played with friends, albeit it is possible to play in 'singleplayer'.[3] It contains procedural generation for the island, acting very similar to the 2011 game Minecraft.[4][5] Power-ups are also obtainable with joke names such as 'Spooo Bean'.[6]
Reception
Muck received an overall positive reception, reportedly having over 16 thousand players online at peak hours in 2021[7] and having over 3 million downloads on Steam. It gained a "very positive" rating on its Steam page from about 70 thousand reviewers,[5][6] and once had a very active speedrunning community, holding number 2 on speedrun.com's top speedrunned games.[citation needed]
The game has been praised for its uniqueness with Ali Jones from GamesRadar+ described it as 'a parody low-res survival game' and called the game 'genuinely good'.[8] Sarfraz Khan from GameRant described it the look of Muck as 'colorful visuals and a vibrant world'.[9]
