Bewitched is the second studio album by Icelandic singer-songwriter Laufey. It was released on 8 September 2023 through AWAL. The album's executive producer, Spencer Stewart, had produced some of Laufey's preceding albums.
Musically, Bewitched consists of jazz pop ballads which deal with a variety of romantic themes in its songs. The album was predominantly written and produced by Laufey and Stewart, alongside the Philharmonia Orchestra, Freddy Wexler, Dan Wilson, and Max Wolfgang. The album was met with acclaim from music critics, who complimented the songs for their modern spin on jazz and nostalgic quality at the same time; Laufey's technical skills were also a subject of praise in the reviews. With this, the album earned Laufey her first Grammy Award nomination and win, winning Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the 2024 Ceremony.
Four singles preceded the album: "From the Start", "Promise", "Bewitched" and "California and Me", the first of which marked Laufey's first song to chart on record charts. Bewitched peaked at number two on the Icelandic albums chart and was Laufey's first album to chart in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Additionally, the album topped the Australian Jazz & Blues Albums chart. To promote the album, Laufey embarked on her second concert tour, the Bewitched Tour.
Following the success of the album, Laufey announced a reissue of the album in 2024 — Bewitched: The Goddess Edition — which was preceded by the single "Goddess". The single also earned Laufey a nomination for Push Performance Of The Year at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
Background and title
With the announcement, Laufey described Bewitched as "a love album, whether it be a love towards a friend or a lover or life". She reflected on her first album's theme of becoming an adult and contrasted it with having since "experienced a little bit more of that, and [...] writing about the magic in the love of being young".

Marketing
Pre-release
Laufey announced Bewitched in June 2023, self-describing it as "a love album, whether it be a love towards a friend or a lover or life."[3][4] Prior to the release of the album, the track listing of the album was made available to the public through an unsolved crossword where one would have had to find each title of each song in the listing within the puzzle. The songs' digital sheet music were then "leaked" by Laufey a few days before the release of the album with the prerequisite for fans to pre-save the album online. Around 24,000 people downloaded the sheet music and some had posted their own renditions of songs in the album.[5][6]
Release and live performances
Bewitched was released by AWAL on 8 September 2023.[7]
Tour
To further promote the album, Laufey embarked on a tour entitled the Bewitched Tour (2023–24). She performed in North America, Europe,[8] Asia, and Australia.[9] The tour was then known as the Bewitched: The Goddess Tour on 8 April 2024 following the reissue of the album.[10] Maddie Browning of Boston.com gave a positive review of the concert after the show at the Wang Theatre, stating that concerts by her were like a "musical experience" rather than a traditional concert.[11] Isabel de Leon of the Manila Bulletin also gave a positive review of the concert after the show at Laufey's first arena headliner at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, stating that Laufey "dazzled, mesmerized, bewitched, and held the audience at the palm of her talented hands" due to the mix of her singing and instrumentation with the piano, cello, and guitar during the performance.[12] An upcoming concert film, entitled A Night at the Symphony: Hollywood Bowl, was filmed during a performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, United States, on 7 August 2024.[13][14]

Bewitched received a score of 83 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on six critics' reviews, indicating "universal acclaim".[15] Uncut felt that "if these [tracks] feel like throwbacks, they're no more so than Norah Jones' best work, and there's nonetheless something timeless about the breezy 'While You Were Sleeping' and, with its chugging guitars, 'Lovesick'".[19] In a five-star review, Hannah Mylrea of NME described Bewitched as "confident and musically ambitious, melding jazz, pop and modern classical composition", throughout which "Laufey's impressive technical ability shines".[17]
James Hickey of DIY wrote that Laufey's "crystalline voice and effortless charisma make this album into a gorgeous display of a unique talent", which he also described as "stuffed full of immaculate jazz ballads, shot through with luscious strings and swooning stories of hopeless love".[16] The Line of Best Fit's Matthew Kim opined that Laufey "improves on her already effective formula in just about every department", and while she does not "reinvent the wheel when it comes to the antique jazz-pop sound that she's already mastered", "she certainly diversifies her palette".[1] Alex Ramos of Pitchfork found it to be "bolder and more intentional" than Everything I Know About Love as "here, Laufey doesn't simply let jazz inform the work; she uses it as a vehicle to enact fantasies and ambitions, lending her contemporary musings a misty, out-of-time quality".[18]
Accolades
At the 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony, Bewitched received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, earning Laufey's first Grammy Award nomination. It won the accolade, earning her first Grammy Award.[20][21] It was then nominated for Album of the Year in the Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, and Electronic category at the 2024 Icelandic Music Awards, losing out to Museum by JFDR.[22][23] Additionally, it received placements as one of the "Best Albums of 2023" from rankings made by critics from Billboard,[24] NME,[25] Uproxx,[26] Variety,[27] and Vogue.[28]
