Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo (UEES) is a non-profit private university located in Guayaquil, Ecuador and was founded by Dr. Carlos Ortega Maldonado. It was accredited by CONESUP, which is the Ecuadorian higher education accrediting agency. The Campus first opened in the northern part of the city, but then it moved to its new campus, adjacent to the city of Guayaquil and near the suburb of Samborondón. One distinctive program of UEES is the International Careers Program (ICP). The program allows Ecuadorian students to take as many subjects as they wish in English and allows foreign students to study their subjects in both English and Spanish, as well as to get involved with Ecuadorian culture.

History

The founding of UEES was first approved by the CONESUP (National University and Polytechnic Schools) Council and then by former Ecuadorian President Sixto Durán-Ballén in 1993. A year later, the opening ceremony was held and UEES was officially inaugurated. Dr. Carlos Ortega Maldonado was appointed as the first Chancellor.

UEES opened with the College of Business and departments, such as: International Business, Business Administration, Finance and Marketing. In 1995 the first group of students registered as full time students. Some of them received the benefits of the Plan Talento which is a need-base scholarship granted to those students who show academic excellence. In 1997 the College of Law, Policy and Development was opened along with the International Degree Program. The latter is part of the Economics and Business Management School and classes are taught entirely in English for those students who wish to complete their studies in any English-speaking country.

In 1998 UEES created the Institute of Development, Equity and Peace which is part of the College of Law and Liberal Arts. New needs arose one year after. Since many people could not follow their course work in the traditional weekday schedule, UEES opened the Weekend College Program. Today, it is called University Program for Executives.

In 2000 the University created a new division to promote and create professional development opportunities for students, or the Unidad de Desarrollo del Espíritu Empresarial UDEM (to encourage a spirit of entrepreneurship in students.) One year later UEES moved to its own campus now located in the neighborhood of Tornero in Samborondón and the following Colleges were created: Systems, Telecommunications and Electronics; whereas the Liberal Arts and the Science Schools were created in 2001; the College of Architecture and Design was created in 2002, and finally the College of Tourism and Hotel Management was created a year after.

UEES Campus

The campus is known for having the most modern and useful facilities along the Ecuadorian coast. It also offers a wide variety of services for students, including Wireless internet connection available throughout the campus; state-of-the-art computer labs in every building; a library that holds more than twenty thousand reproductions and virtual access with more than three million academic publications. The University transportation system provides easy commuting from the city and the institution. The bus fare is inexpensive for students and free of charge for staff and faculty. For security purposes, a large parking area with permanent surveillance is provided for students, staff and faculty at no cost.

UEES campus has seven central buildings with several more to be built in the near future. The different academic departments and schools are distributed in buildings: A, B, C, D, C1, E, F, and G) as follows:

Building A: The College of Systems, Telecommunications and Electronics and the Library.

Building B: The College of Tourism and Hotel Sciences.

Building C: The offices of the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and Dean; the Marketing and Public Relations Department, as well as the Tech Support Laboratory.

Building C1: Professors’ VIP room, Health Care Department, the College of Law and Policy.

Building D: Financial Resources, Administration and Human Resources offices.

Building F: The College of Architecture and Design, College of Liberal Arts and Education Sciences and the Pastoral Care Branch, in charge of the Chapel.

Building G: The School of International Studies, Graduate School and Continuous Education Division, the College of Economics and Business Sciences, the International Careers Program (ICP), the School of Languages, the Auditorium, the Law Court Room and the Chapel.

New Sports Complex

On July 14, 2007 a new sports complex was opened on campus. This new facility has a soccer field, basketball and volleyball courts; dance/aerobics studio, ping-pong tables, and a swimming pool. There is also a gym with exercise machines. Both current and former students may use the complex free of charge. With this annex to the campus, the University is now able offer courses that require physical training, such as boxing, yoga and aerobics.

Museum

The university has a small museum located in Building F with original relics from ancient Ecuadorian cultures. These ceramic artifacts belong to various cultures such as la Tolita, Jama-Coaque, Bahia, Guangala, Valdivia, Machalilla and Chorrera. The owner of this precious collection is Guillermo Hurel, who is a faculty member. The purpose of putting this collection on display is to encourage students to learn more about the ancient cultures that existed in Ecuador and their art.

Organization

UEES is a private, non-profit, nonsectarian university whose major income comes from tuition. UEES requires its students to participate in a community service project before graduating. Most of UEES courses are taught in Spanish. As part of its international vision, UEES offers a variety of courses taught completely in English by international faculty.

Curriculum, degrees and majors

UEES students choose an academic program that requires completing 140 credits of coursework; students may earn diplomas in Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Science. UEES also has research departments and a teaching faculty for most academic disciplines; as of 2007, UEES offers 28 majors.[1]

Center for International Studies

The Center of International Studies is in charge of the program in which international students can study Spanish, continue with their majors in English or Spanish, if they have an advance level of Spanish, and also do Community Service. International students may study at UEES from 4 weeks to 4 months

Program for International Students

The UEES Program for International Students enables arriving students to discover Ecuador, study the issues and problems of the Andean Region, analyze Latin American development issues, develop their Spanish language skills, perform Community Service in Ecuador, immerse themselves in a different culture, and enroll in regular university courses (credit and non-credit courses in Spanish or English.)

International Academic Programs[1]

UEES offers a wide variety of programs for international students interested in studying abroad in Ecuador.

The Ecology of Coastal Ecuador- Students who enjoy nature, archaeological and ecological fields, and, most importantly, who wish to learn Spanish, will find this program interesting. The program analyses the exuberant ecologic system of the coastal region of Ecuador, combining academic study with hands-on experience. Students have the opportunity to visit 3 places: Chirije, the newest and most attractive ecological and archaeological park along the Ecuadorian coast; Bahia, a culturally and historically rich city; and Galapagos Islands, which have extraordinary landscapes, exotic flora, and a large population of endemic fauna.

Community Health in a Developing Region- This program is aimed at students who want to be immersed in current economic and social issues. Participants will have the opportunity to observe alternative medical practices, which include herbal medicine and folk healing. This program will prove particularly beneficial, especially for students majoring in biology, pre-medicine, social work, or nursing.

Economics and Business Studies in Ecuador- This program allows business students with an appropriate Spanish level to enroll in UEES courses compatible with their major or minor at their home college.

Intensive Spanish Language Program- In this program, students focus on developing their reading, speaking, listening and comprehension skills; students have 4 course hours per day.

The Ecuadorian Internship Program- Through this program, students have the opportunity to practice their Spanish while working in agencies, organizations, and companies in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The working load is from 4 to 8 hours a day.

Serve and Learn Spanish in Ecuador- Through this program, students learn and enhance their Spanish language skills in a multicultural environment. Socio-economic Development in Ecuador-In this program, students combine coursework with business internships, community service, and cultural organization activities. Students have a week of orientation, followed by 14 weeks of study. (4 to 8 hours a day)

UEES Chamber of Commerce

The UEES Chamber of Commerce, (CEM-UEES) a unique part of the University. It is a non-profit organization for young entrepreneurs that seeks to be the first Chamber of commerce in Ecuador formed by college students.

Vision UEES seeks to promote and develop the entrepreneurship in graduate and undergraduate students, by encouraging the principles of entrepreneurship at the national level; to offer national and international links with a variety of institutions to promote cultural and academic exchange and propose simple solutions to the needs of communities.

Mission The fundamental philosophy of the UEES Chamber of Commerce is to motivate, orient and focus the enterprise initiatives of UEES graduate and undergraduates students. The Chamber of Commerce seeks to reduce the failure rate of student’s enterprises first year. Also it seeks to increase the presence of new competitive managers and entrepreneurs to take advantage of synergy and become more competitive worldwide. It encourages them to generate commercial and academic alliances with other associations of young entrepreneurs at a national and international level.

Strategic Objectives -To promote and develop the entrepreneur vocation of the graduate and undergraduate students. -To help students with information, good advising and research that they may implement in order to create innovative enterprises with creative and achievable services with international projects. -To promote the integration and participation of the young entrepreneurs from UEES in organizations already constituted. -To keep contact with the public, private and community services about topics related to the activity of the Chamber. -To serve as an organization of union and coordination among its members promoting the spirit of solidarity among them.

Strategic Plans In order to reach the strategic objectives the Chamber expects to: -Organize conversations, courses, forum or conferences that contribute to the formation of new managers and entrepreneurs. -Associate with other similar organism to exchange academic experiences and participate in national and international meetings to expand its presence in the market. -Advise students regarding technology and finance -Incorporate a virtual site of the CEM-UEES in the web page of the university. -Coordinate activities with the department of Public Relations from UEES to use different media of communication to preach the principles of this entrepreneur movement. -Organize social events to collect funds for the better accomplishment of its objectives.

Students services and security

STUDENT SERVICES[6]

UEES offers financial aid to help their students. It offers scholarships to students who need financial help and have maintain a good academic standing.

UEES also cares about the health [7] of their students, which is why it offers health insurance that covers accident, death, or injury inside the campus.

UEES has a library, a copy center and a cyber café. In the library you can obtain information by audio,video and multimedia. In addition, you can check for library books online. At the copy center students can make copies and also bind their projects. In the cyber café students can use for free the computers to check their e-mail, finish homework, and print papers.

UEES keeps students informed about the university activities and changes with electronic billboards. UEES gives their students the opportunity to study abroad, in different parts of the world. UEES has agreements with many foreign universities

Security

As in the United States, security in Ecuador is a very important topic to talk about. Guayaquil is a big city where residents and visitors alike take precautions to be safe. The University has certain rules to ensure that.

For the entrance to the facilities, you need an University ID. Also, video cameras protect students while on campus. It is good to know that these cameras are not inside the classroom; they are in the halls, in the entrance of the campus and in the parking lot.

For security, drinking alcohol is prohibited on campus and the institutions perimeter. Also, it is prohibited to carry any type of firearm or harmful object on campus. Similarly, gambling is also prohibited within the institution.

UEES media center:

The Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo has a broadcasting media center which includes a radio station and a TV studio. It is a great tool for the students who are in the Communication Department to practice as if they were conducting a TV or radio program.

Students are able to go to the radio station and record "radio programs" which are later edited on 2 computers with specialized programs and on other electronic editing devices.

The radio station has everything students need to develop their skills, not only as radio broadcasters, but as editors as well. UEES has 2 editing rooms. Each of them has a macro computer with the best technology for editing.

Besides the radio center, they have a TV studio. As with the radio center, they have all the electronic devices to edit video and audio. This studio has 2 high-tech cameras with prompters, a croma, which is the green or blue fond so the students can apply any background to the recordings.

Here, students can simulate program production. They can learn everything that really happens in a TV studio: camera's coordination, editing, lights and more.

UEES also has a magazine called "Campus". This magazine collects information about the university. It also has interesting articles on different subjects which are written by the students to develop communication skills and give them a way to express themselves.

Besides "Campus" there is another magazine called "Podium". This magazine is issued every month. Its director is Carlos Calderón and the members of the editorial council are: Galo García Feroud (President), Dr. Carlos Ortega Maldonado, David Samaniego Torres, Jorge Páez Galarraga and Xavier Alarcón Espinoza. These members and the director are in charge of revising every month the articles the magazine will publish.

Dr. Carlos Ortega Maldonado, as the president of the University, is the one who writes the editorial every month. The magazine has articles about education, society, law and politic science, economy, science and technology, tourism, journalism, literature, history, art, culture, external politics, movies, and more. These articles are written by people with a lot of experience in their fields to keep the magazine interesting.
In general, the university gives its students all the media tools for them to practice and be prepared for their futures.

Major in Written Press: The graduate from this major can analyze and evaluate information, to reason logically inside a historical perspective, actual and global; understand and apply the principles, laws and concepts of the social communication.

Major in Audiovisual Journalism: The graduate from this major can analyze and evaluate information, to reason logically inside a historical perspective, actual and global; understand and apply the principles, laws and concepts of the social communication. Value the social responsibility of the means of communication and prepare efficient audiovisual messages thanks to the knowledge of the value and the importance of the language of the image and its combination and articulation of the natural tongue.

Major in International Journalism: The graduate from this major can evaluate the information, reason logically inside an international historical perspective, prepare visual messages and effective graphs, understand the law of communication and value the responsibility of the means of communication.

Communicational Organization:

Major in Public Relationship and Events: The graduate from this major can create, execute and evaluate permanent plans of public relations, with ethical criteria and communicational efficiency.

Major in Corporative Communication: The graduate from this major can analyze and evaluate the necessities of an organization.

Major in Human and Organizational Development: The graduate from this major can take decisions at a managerial level, by the analysis and control of the indicators of management analyzing the labour environment from a more objective and creative view.

Clubs and activities

UEES[8] sponsors activities such as an Ecuadorian cultural week, a day of cultural diversity, and a University Queen contest. UEES has clubs that are integrated into different departments, such as the juridical club, technology club, journalism club, economic club, ecology club, leadership club, reading club, cinema club, travel club, international club, executives club, and the English club.
