Bebo, an acronym for “Blog early, blog often”, is an online social media network similar in format to MySpace, Xanga, Facebook, and Yahoo! 360. The site was founded in January 2005 by husband and wife team Michael and Xochi Birch. It was given a major relaunch in July 2005. Bebo can be used in many countries around the world including Ireland, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. Bebo have recently launched a Polish version of the site which uses a different user database. There are also plans for French and German versions among others. |

Profiles can be personalized by using a bebo skin, a design template that is the background of the user's profile. These skins can be found on other users profiles or independent bebo skin sites by clicking a "try it on" link while logged into bebo.com. Each profile must include two specific modules, and users can select from many more modules to add. One of the required modules is locked into place and cannot be moved, and the other is movable but cannot be removed.. The two modules that must be included are a comment section where other users can leave a message - this is movable, and a list of up to 32 of the user's friends. By default, when an account is created it is private, which limits access to the profile to friends specifically added by the user unless the user selects the "Public Profile" option. If the user selects the "Private Profile" option their profile will still be visible to any other members of a school/college they may have joined. |
|||
Profiles are also capable of including quizzes which offer multiple choice questions, polls for their friends to vote in and comment on, photo albums which allows the user to upload an unlimited number of pictures with a size limit of 2MB on each single picture and a limit of 48 photos in a single album, blogs with a comments section for others' responses, a list of bands (see below) of which the profile-holder is a "fan", a list of groups that the user is a member of and a "Video Box"; which plays video, which may be either linked from popular Internet site YouTube, uploaded directly to Bebo's servers via VideoEgg or copied from a Bebo Media Content Provider's page who may add any external swf onto their profile. Members can also add "widgets" which are more graphically rich components provided by an external site — typically something like a slide-show of the member's photos with some transition effect applied. Bebo also includes a simple drawing system called Freeform Art (ffart). This allows users to draw simple pictures which may then be uploaded to a friend's profile. Ffart drawings may be displayed in two different places on a profile, the Whiteboard module allows users to upload a drawing to a profile and leave a short message with it. The latest three drawings are shown on the profile and others may be viewed by selecting 'View All'. Other users may leave a response to a drawing which can either be in the form of a comment or be a drawing. Another module which uses the ffart system is the wall module. Each visitor to a page can leave a 'brick' on the wall if they wish. Each 'brick' is a ffart drawing. These drawings are then displayed on the page in wall form with all the drawings (bricks) making up a wall. |
|||
There is also a 'My Skins' module available which allows Bebo Skin artists to display their favorite public Bebo Skins on their profile. Bebo Mobile users also have the option for a 'Mobile Uploads' module which shows the latest picture uploaded by the user via mms. Bebo Nation which is a system that allows Bebo users to buy space on a map to display their profile picture with a link to their profile (similar to the Million Dollar Homepage, but not entirely so) also has a module which allows users to show the bits of land they have purchased in Bebo Nation on their profile. Lastly, users have the option of adding up to 8 different applications at one time to their profile. Other types of profiles such as Bands or Groups will not have this functionality until later in 2008. |
|||
Members can view the recent changes friends have made to their homepage from the 'Home' menu. These changes can include uploaded photos, updated flashboxes and newly added videos and friends. |
|||
A map feature enables members to see who has being viewing their profile. However, the viewer must be logged in while viewing and have their profile set to public in the map section, in order for this to be possible. |

===Bebo Music=== |
|||
On 11 July 2006, "Bebo Music" was launched (originally as Bebo bands). On this section of the site, bands or solo artists are able to create a profile showcasing their music. Along with undiscovered talents, it has a section called "New Music Only on Bebo" linking to established artist pages including Paris Hilton, Matt Willis, Orson, Coldplay, Kylie Minogue, The Kooks, Lily Allen, U2, Papa Roach and others. |
|||
The band profiles include a band member list which is similar to the friends list on a normal profile, a list of "fans" (fans who have added the band as though it were a friend), an area for tour dates, a blog, and a list of songs which have been uploaded for playing through Bebo's media player, or to be added to other user's playlists. These songs can be grouped by the band into albums, along with cover-art. All band members can edit the content of the band profile. |
|||
Although the Bebo Music section is intended for use by musical groups, the facility is also used by many to form clubs or societies, or as unofficial fan pages for established bands. |
|||
===Bebo Authors=== |
|||
On 22 February 2007, Bebo Authors, also known as Bebo Books, was launched. On this section of the site, authors can upload chapters of their books and also get them reviewed with a certain module. Currently there is no module to display books on a profile page like there is for Bands and Groups. This can give users the option of keeping up with the new books on the shelves and also gives children or teenagers the option of talking about or even to their heros or favourite authors. |
|||
===Groups=== |
|||
On 10 July 2007, the 'Group' module was added to pages. This enabled people to view groups which were previously joined to a school and were also viewable only to school members. Bebo also gave an option to convert existing Authors or Bands to Groups. This conversion takes up to 24 hours as the profile must be manually changed by a member of Bebo staff. Group pages give users an option to join things they find interesting. These groups can often be educational as well as associated with pop culture. |

===Mobile=== |
|||
On 13 October 2007, Bebo launched a mobile service which allows users to receive text alerts and update their profile via their mobile phone. This is currently available to Orange UK and O2 Ireland customers. The service consists of a mobile site, text alerts for new comments and photo only uploads via mms. On 19 March 2008, Bebo launched a new mobile site which can be accessed by mobile phones and PDAs whilst users are out and about. This can be used by pointing your browser at m.bebo.com. |

===Integration with other Social Networks=== |
|||
Bebo currently allow users to add their AIM, Skype and Windows Live Messenger usernames to their profile. The Skype and Windows Live Messenger links offer links to quickly chat or add that user in that program. The Windows Live Messenger links show up only in Internet Explorer by default as it uses the 'msnim' protocol. However, it is possible to view (and use) the Windows Live Messenger links in another web browser such as Firefox or Opera by masking the user agent as Internet Explorer and using a tool called the WLM Protocol Handler to handle the msnim protocol. Using the AIM links to contact someone opens up a Web AIM client. Bebo also offers a co-branded AIM downloadable client. |
|||
===Bebo Open Media Platform=== |
|||
Announced on the 13 November 2007 Bebo Open Media Platform is a platform for companies to distribute content to the Bebo community. It is a business model where content providers can bring their own media player to Bebo, and are able to monetize the advertising within that. Each content provider has a specialised page designed for video which showcases any Flash video content at the top of the profile. Many networks such as CBS, Sky, Ustream.tv, BBC, and Last.fm for example are currently signed up for the services. |
|||
==Open Application Platform== |
|||
On 1 November 2007 Bebo announced that it will be joining OpenSocial, a set of common APIs for building social applications across the web. In addition to this Bebo announced plans for a Developers Platform and stated they were to make a further platform announcement on November 13, 2007. This platform announcement however, turned out to be about the Bebo 'Open Media Platform' and not a true API. Bebo's Developers Platform was launched in early December 2007 with just over 50 applications from partners such as iLike, Flixster, Last.fm, RockYou, Gaia Online, Yahoo and Bunnyhero Labs. Millions of applications were installed in the first couple of days. Despite this, 81% of almost 8,000 respondents to an official poll voted that Applications have "made Bebo worse", with 14% of respondents voting they have made it better and 3% with no opinion.. |
|||
The platform is based on Facebook's Platform and is a slightly modified version to include some Bebo only features such as Book profiles or Channel profiles. All Facebook applications should be fully compatible with the platform. Initially, the addition of new applications was limited to a select number of developers. As the platform has matured and launch defects fixed, Bebo has allowed all developers to submit new applications. |
|||
On 15 January 2008 Widgetbox released the App Accelerator for Bebo, which allows developers to create a Bebo application based on their pre-existing Widgetbox-registered widget. These widgets are registered as their own Bebo application and are provided functionality mirroring Widgetbox's App Accelerator for Facebook. |
|||
Bebo also announced Google's Open Social platform will also be implemented in early 2008, making Bebo the first website to support both Open Social and the Facebook Platform. |

Bebo, an acronym for “Blog early, blog often”, is an online social media network similar in format to MySpace, Xanga, Facebook, and Yahoo! 360. The site was founded in January 2005 by husband and wife team Michael and Xochi Birch. It was given a major relaunch in July 2005.[2] Bebo can be used in many countries around the world including Ireland, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. Bebo have recently launched a Polish[3] version of the site which uses a different user database. There are also plans for French[4] and German[5] versions among others.
Bebo is the 85th most popular English-language website (at 1 June 2007) according to Alexa Internet[6]. According to Hitwise, Bebo is the third most popular social networking website but has only a 1.18% share of the market[7]. Bebo also announced on March 17 2007 that it was the most popular website in Ireland[8], however, as of October 7 2007, Bebo dropped to second, behind Google.ie[9]. As of September 2007 Alexa ranked it as the 11th most popular site in the UK with MySpace occupying 9th place and Facebook 3rd place. In the U.S. however, it was not in the top 100 at that point. Bebo was also listed as the number one term most representative of search trends on Google in 2006[10]. Bebo was acquired by AOL on March 13, 2008 for $850m (£417m).[11][12]
Profiles
Profiles can be personalized by using a bebo skin, a design template that is the background of the user's profile. These skins can be found on other users profiles or independent bebo skin sites by clicking a "try it on" link while logged into bebo.com. Each profile must include two specific modules, and users can select from many more modules to add. One of the required modules is locked into place and cannot be moved, and the other is movable but cannot be removed.[13]. The two modules that must be included are a comment section where other users can leave a message - this is movable, and a list of up to 32 of the user's friends. By default, when an account is created it is private, which limits access to the profile to friends specifically added by the user unless the user selects the "Public Profile" option.[14] If the user selects the "Private Profile" option their profile will still be visible to any other members of a school/college they may have joined.
Members can view the recent changes friends have made to their homepage from the 'Home' menu. These changes can include uploaded photos, updated flashboxes and newly added videos and friends.
A map feature enables members to see who has being viewing their profile. However, the viewer must be logged in while viewing and have their profile set to public in the map section, in order for this to be possible.
Bebo Music
On 11 July 2006, "Bebo Music" was launched (originally as Bebo bands)[15].
Although the Bebo Music section is intended for use by musical groups, the facility is also used by many to form clubs or societies, or as unofficial fan pages for established bands.
Bebo Authors
On 22 February 2007, Bebo Authors, also known as Bebo Books, was launched. On this section of the site, authors can upload chapters of their books and also get them reviewed with a certain module. Currently there is no module to display books on a profile page like there is for Bands and Groups. This can give users the option of keeping up with the new books on the shelves and also gives children or teenagers the option of talking about or even to their heros or favourite authors[16].
Groups
On 10 July 2007, the 'Group' module was added to pages. This enabled people to view groups which were previously joined to a school and were also viewable only to school members. Bebo also gave an option to convert existing Authors or Bands to Groups. This conversion takes up to 24 hours as the profile must be manually changed by a member of Bebo staff. Group pages give users an option to join things they find interesting. These groups can often be educational as well as associated with pop culture.[17]
Mobile
On 13 October 2007, Bebo launched a mobile service[18] which allows users to receive text alerts and update their profile via their mobile phone. This can be used by pointing your browser at m.bebo.com.[19]
Integration with other Social Networks
Bebo Open Media Platform
Announced on the 13 November 2007 Bebo Open Media Platform is a platform for companies to distribute content to the Bebo community. It is a business model where content providers can bring their own media player to Bebo, and are able to monetize the advertising within that. Each content provider has a specialised page designed for video which showcases any Flash video content at the top of the profile. Many networks such as CBS, Sky, Ustream.tv, BBC, and Last.fm for example are currently signed up for the services.
Open Application Platform
Despite this, 81% of almost 8,000 respondents to an official poll voted that Applications have "made Bebo worse", with 14% of respondents voting they have made it better and 3% with no opinion.[20].
Bebo also announced Google's Open Social platform will also be implemented in early 2008, making Bebo the first website to support both Open Social and the Facebook Platform.
Suicide reports
Recently, there have been reports in south Wales about several teenagers using Bebo linked to suicide through the social networking website.[21] It is unclear what triggered the tragic deaths, but there were reports of hangings at the time.
