Descent 4 is an upcoming video game being developed by Interplay Entertainment. It will be the fourth installment in the Descent series. The games has had a troubled development history, however, Interplay Entertainment recently confirmed that the game's development is back on track, and that they were also looking to raise funds for the development of an MMO based on the Fallout franchise.[1]

Descent 4 was announced by Volition on December 31st, 1998 on a sub-site on the official Volition website which contained concept art. An archived copy can be found here.

The archived website still contains the only officially released media regarding the production. However, only one plot point was officially revealed on the site: the main central character was to be named "Parker".

Development

Development of Descent 4 was officially cancelled in 2000 as revealed by a PlanetDescent interview conducted on September 11th, 2000. The same interview revealed that technologies that were in development for Descent 4 were rolled over to another project then-in development at Volition, Red Faction. Some speculation was made that Red Faction was Descent 4, since Red Faction's main character was named Parker and some of the plot points for Red Faction were very similar to Descent as was mentioned in the PlanetDescent interview, but Mike Kulas, then-president of Volition, denied that Red Faction was Descent 4 and stated that:

Red Faction is a new game. Descent 4 was canceled. Sure, a lot of the technology that was going into Descent 4 is present in Red Faction, but the story is very different. Yes, there are similarities, but I don't think it will make much sense to view Red Faction and Descent as being part of the same universe.

PlanetDescent also asked if there was to be a Descent 4 developed by Volition after Red Faction in the then-foreseeable future. Mr. Kulas stated that it seemed:

...very unlikely that we'll work on a Descent title.

This could possibly be due to the fact that in 2000, Volition left Interplay to be part of THQ. [2]

However, on November 13, 2007, GameSpot reported that Interplay has announced that it will restart its in-house development studio and has plans to develop a Descent sequel (likely to be Descent 4) among other classic Interplay IPs if Interplay can secure financing for the possible Descent sequel. GameSpot stated that:

Among the projects Interplay has said it wants to develop are sequels to Earthworm Jim, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Descent, and MDK, provided it can find the financing.

On March 13, Interplay updated their website, inserting a background image highlighting some of the games in the company's roster. The picture included the trademarked blue shield orb known from the Descent series, offering further evidence the Descent franchise is one of the IP's the company is focusing on.
